Dan Basile Wins Leadership Award From SC Media

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Vectra, the leader in automating the hunt for in-progress cyber attacks with artificial intelligence, today announced Dan Basile, executive director of the security operations center at Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), is one of the honorees named in the threat seekers category unveiled in the inaugural SC Media Reboot Leadership Awards. Some 39 honorees across a range of professional categories were revealed as part of a special editorial section at SCMagazine.com on Wednesday, August 22, 2017.

Designed and launched to showcase and acknowledge industry luminaries who are positively impacting and advancing the cybersecurity arena, the awards program is an extension of SC Media's annual Reboot edition. In that end-of-the-year special, which is published both in magazine form and as an exclusive, expanded section at SCMagazine.com, the almost 30-year-old brand's editorial team identifies the best and brightest cybersecurity professionals and their many achievements.

"Dan Basile is a passionate, tenacious and thoughtful information security advocate," said Paul Wiggins, program manager for the Knowledge Engineering Center (KEC) of the Texas A&M System Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). "His role and responsibility has increased dramatically over the past 12 years. His great work and, in some cases, pioneering information security efforts in the Texas A&M System, eventually led to his current position as the executive director of the security operations center, where his work has earned him this well-deserved honor."

"I sincerely appreciate this recognition of my team's efforts to detect and mitigate threats in near real time," said Basile. "With more than 250,000 people on our networks at any given time, identifying cyber attackers among these users is a formidable task. But with the security operations center's use of Vectra Cognito, we continue to shrink the time it takes to detect threats. One person can now investigate about 50 threats in just two hours. This enables interns and analysts on our security team to effectively mitigate attacks before any would-be thieves can make off with valuable intellectual property."

Tis first year of the SC Media Reboot Leadership Awards categories included:

  • Influencers
  • Thought Leaders
  • Threat Seekers
  • Chief Information Officer/C-Suite
  • Chief Privacy Officer
  • Outstanding Freshman
  • Outstanding Educator
  • Rising Stars

The contenders who entered to be considered for these various categories faced a thorough judging process conducted by SC Media's editorial team that included a review of their professional backgrounds, references and work undertaken to benefit the wider industry, as well as any other research deemed necessary by editorial leaders. Honorees finally decided in each category by the team have been called out for their outstanding service, qualifications and advancements in the cybersecurity industry.

"Businesses today are increasingly under threat by a range of cybercriminals," said Teri Robinson, executive editor, SC Media. "The cybersecurity leaders we're celebrating with these leadership awards are on the frontlines every day to help defend and protect our critical systems, data and privacy from their attacks. To showcase their advances is SC's honor."
