Media Alert: Children's TV Show Space Racers to Produce Solar Eclipse Event in Spray, Oregon


Hit television show Space Racers, airing on Sprout (News - Alert) and Netflix, will join Spray School District in Eastern Oregon to execute special events on Sunday and Monday, August 20th and 21st, for the coming total solar eclipse.

Phil Starkey, Superintendent/Principal, and the staff of the Spray School District, will welcome Space Racers Executive Producer and member of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, Matthias Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt will be leading out-of-this-world special events in Spray, a town with a population of just 153 people, located in the path of totality for the August 21 total solar eclipse.

When:

Sunday, August 20, 8pm at the school building at 303 Park Ave, Spray, OR:
Presentation about the science behind a solar eclipse along with a screening of the Space Racers episodes "Total Eclipse" and "Dodo in Charge." Following the presentation and screening, the group will venture outside on the campground for a constellation and stargazing program at 9pm.

Monday, August 21, 9am at the campsites adjacent to the school:
The Space Racers and visitors will observe the eclipse. First contact is at 9:08am with the 1-minute, 51-second total eclipse occurring at 10:21am. The event will finish at 11:43am.

Real science experiments will include data logging of temperature and luminosity changes durig the eclipse. Kids will receive Space Racers giveaways.



There will be filming during all events aimed at producing an educational video about teaching and assisting children with empirical scientific observation. The resulting video will be used by future educators in their classrooms.

About Spray School District

The district is a unified school district with students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The campus includes five separate buildings with three containing classrooms: one houses K-3 and 4-7, one houses 8-12, and the central services building contains the administration offices, café, library, and media center. Adjacent to these three buildings are a separate woodshop and gym. The district employs seven teachers, two instructional assistants, and one administrator. The district operates two boarding residences for high school students from all over the world and the Pacific Northwest. The boarding residence for girls is located across the street from the school and the boys' residence is located about a mile from campus near the John Day River. Each dorm is a family setting for six high school students.
