Citizens Against Government Waste Supports the Protection of U.S. Intellectual Property

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) President Tom Schatz issued the following statement in support of the executive memorandum that was signed by President Donald Trump on August 14, 2017, directing the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to investigate whether China has harmed the intellectual property rights of American citizens:

"Nearly every product that Americans use is the result of someone's idea or intellectual property (IP), and its protection is vital for the economy. President Trump's directive rightly puts China on notice for its profligate theft of Aerican IP.

"CAGW cited China's extensive theft of IP in its 2014 book, Intellectual Property: Making it Personal. The book detailed how China has stolen trade secrets from U.S. companies in order to produce counterfeit goods like pharmaceuticals and pilfered copyrighted material like movies, making them available at little to no cost. China has also used its anti-monopoly law to pursue its own industrial policy goals and engaged in systemic curbing of IP rights.

"This behavior should not be tolerated anymore. We thank President Trump for shining a bright light on this critical issue and look forward to the results of the USTR investigation."

Citizens Against Government Waste is the nation's largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.
