CompuCom Survey: Self-Checkout Tops List of Retail Technology Wishes Among IT Pros

According to a new survey from CompuCom Systems, Inc. ("CompuCom®"), a leading technology infrastructure services company, a majority of IT professionals surveyed (43 percent) are looking forward to the expansion of self-checkout technology in retail environments in the coming year, more than personalized signage and displays, interactive fitting rooms or shopping from new screens. The online poll collected responses from 694 IT professionals across multiple industries from February 24 - May 9, 2017.

While people are incresingly researching products on their mobile devices, 90 percent of retail sales in the U.S. happen in stores, according to a report from eMarketer®.1

"Consumers are not going to stop shopping in stores, especially as new technologies merge the physical and virtual worlds to improve the retail experience - and also because we often want to see, touch and feel items before we buy," noted Tom Alvey, SVP, Retail Solutions Group at CompuCom. "It's perhaps not surprising to see self-checkout rise to the top in the poll, since paying for purchases is probably the least pleasurable part of the shopping experience, and making the process as quick and easy as possible is increasingly important to retailers."

"As we talk to retail clients about the 'store of the future,' customization and speed emerge as key themes. And self-checkout equipment emerged as an important enabling technology - along with technologies such as mobile payments, digital coupons and signage, self-service kiosks and more - which aligns with these poll results," continued Alvey.

Respondents to the CompuCom poll answered the question, "Which new retail technology would you most like to see in use in the next year?"

Self-checkout technology - 43%
Interactive/personalized signage and displays - 21%
Interactive fitting rooms - 19%
Shopping from new screens - 17%
Total votes: 694
