Code Review is the Best Way to Improve Software Quality According to Global SurveySmartBear Software, the leader in software quality tools for teams, released the results of its latest industry survey in the report, "The State of Code Review 2017: Trends & Insights into Dev Collaboration." The survey was designed to establish benchmarks for the software industry concerning the ways in which organizations are developing and maintaining the quality of software today. The percentage of respondents citing code review as the best way to improve software quality nearly doubled between 2016 and 2017, with code review continuing to be the No. 1 way to improve quality. Nearly three-quarters of respondents are doing code review using a combination of methods, including ad-hoc processes, meetings and tool-based reviews. "With software code driving competitive advantage in numerous products and processes across industries, organizations of all types and sizes view software quality as a top priority," said Ryan Lloyd, Vice President of Products, Test and Development at SmartBear. "While code review continues to be the No.1 way to improve software quality, there are significant challenges to implementing this bes practice such as heavy workloads, time constraints and lack of manpower. Selecting the right tools can make all the difference in code review and meeting whatever an organization's key business drivers are - improving code quality, product safety and regulatory compliance." Only six out of every 10 individuals surveyed say that their organizations are using a tool to help with code review. In addition, the survey has uncovered that the use of a code review tool enables daily code review 30 percent more frequently when compared with other review methods. SmartBear conducted the global online survey for four weeks during December 2016 and January 2017. The findings are based on aggregated responses from more than 550 software developers, testers, IT/operations professionals and business leaders from more than 30 industries.
