University of Advancing Technology and The University of Arizona Executives Elected to Arizona Technology Council Board of DirectorsThe Arizona Technology Council today announced it has appointed Dr. David Bolman, provost and chief academic officer of the University of Advancing Technology, and Stephen Fleming, vice president of Strategic Business Initiatives at The University of Arizona's Office for Research, Discovery and Innovation, to its board of directors. Both were elected unanimously to serve three-year terms at the Council's quarterly board meeting held April 20. "David and Stephen are both highly respected educators with vast industry experience in a wide range of technology sectors," said Steven G. Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council. "They will both serve as tremendous assets and strengthen our ability to develop, connect and empower Arizona's technology community." The Arizona Technology Council's board of directors serves in an advisory and fiduciary role by representing the interests of the state's technology industries in the Council's strategic planning and ongoing operations. The current board includes 41 members representing a diverse set of prominent Arizona-based organizations. Fleming and Bolman provide a unique perspective on the industry, as well as strong backgrounds from a wide variety of education-, business- and technology-related roles. Dr. David Bolman, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, University of Advancing Technology (UAT) Bolman has dedicated his career to educating technologists who will shape and better the community through the innovations they help create. As someone who cares greatly about learning, his work at UAT has had a theme of providing students with exceptional moments and growth through the skills that their professors possess as they create learning spaces. As a technologist, he has worked to create a university where the culture of innovation is celebrated and students learn the toos, techniques, concepts and responsibilities of applying technology in ways that lift up human society. During Bolman's three decades at UAT, the University has grown from a single classroom of 13 students into a destination private college campus dedicated to advancing society through the wise use of technology. Bolman has written and been a featured speaker on the nature of technology as a foundational human force. He is an alumnus and past board president of Valley Leadership, the chair of Valley Leadership's Leadership Institute, a member of New Schools for Phoenix Fellows and an alumnus of the FBI Citizens Academy. Stephen Fleming, Vice President, Strategic Business Initiatives, The University of Arizona, Office for Research, Discovery and Innovation An Atlanta native and summa cum laude graduate of Georgia Tech, Fleming returned to his alma mater in mid-2005 to serve as vice president, Economic Development and Technology Ventures; executive director of the Enterprise Innovation Institute at Georgia Tech; and director of the Advanced Technology Development Center. He now serves as vice president, Strategic Business Initiatives, at The University of Arizona in Tucson. He also maintains a consulting business at Boostphase. As a venture capitalist, Fleming has over 15 years of private equity experience at the general partner level. Prior to his venture capital career, he spent 15 years in operations roles at AT&T (News - Alert) Bell Laboratories, Nortel Networks and LICOM (a venture-funded startup). Fleming is also active in the "alternative space" industry as an investor in seven private aerospace companies and a founding member of the Space Angels Network. He also served on the boards of the Technology Association of Georgia and Culture Connect, a not-for-profit fostering cultural fluency between immigrants and the community at large. He is a former board member of the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta and Tech High School, a charter high school that emphasized science, math and technology in urban Atlanta. Fleming is a member of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2014.
