Tim Cook's recent announcement putting Augmented Reality (AR) at the forefront of its product strategy has emboldened and provoked technology companies to showcase their own AT technologies and platforms.

Following Impossible's introduction of its Google Tango based, and open source, 'Glimpse' platform, Facebook on Tuesday announced its first mainstream AR platform during its annual Developer Conference. Facebook put thecamera, more specifically the camera on your smartphone, front and center of its AR strategy by unveiling 'Facebook Camera Effects' to its developers during F8.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's new open source platform will allow developers to make AR apps which will enable users to view and digitally manipulate the physical world around them with smartphone cameras. A technology popularized and dominated by Snapchat's signature camera filters.
Google was the first technology giant to offer developers an open source AR platform with 'Tango'. However, Google's 'Tango' technology offered considerably more than simple filters with the use of motion tracking, depth perception and area learning.
Glimpse is made possible today by Google's Tango technology. Google Tango allows Glimpse to map indoor spaces, identify users and process device relative position. User information collected via Tango can be crossed with the identity of the user, his/her position and poses and with this, 'Glimpse' promises to redefine areas such as communication and social networking, games, education and online shopping. Moreover, Impossible believes ESV's specialisation in image processing technology as well as ESV's work in autonomous automative telemetry will take Glimpse, depth perception and tracking beyond the shackles of the smartphone into spaces such as cars.
Impossible's Kwame Ferreira recently demonstrated Glimpse's marriage of its proprietary technology and Google Tango which will allow users to show others their creative selves through a multitude of 3D skins and bodies during an announcement in Seoul on the 5th.
Apple's 'Clips', Facebook's 'Camera Effects', the Google Tango enabled 'Glimpse' have fired the first salvos to join Snap's filters in the race for AR domination. The jury is out on who will come out on top but one thing is clear, everything will unfold on the smartphone and its camera.
