At One-Year Anniversary, Mesosphere DC/OS Hits Major Milestones

AUSTIN, Texas, April 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at DockerCon, Mesosphere — the creators of DC/OS, the premier platform for building and running data-rich containerized applications — announced the company has reached major milestones at the one-year anniversary of its open source launch.

During the open source project's first year, more than 100,000 clusters have been launched by a vibrant community including both open source users and enterprise customers. More than 100 enterprise companies use Mesosphere including Autodesk, ESRI and Verizon. In North America alone, four of the top 10 largest banks by assets and three of the top five cable providers by subscribers are powered by Mesosphere DC/OS. Independent software vendors are choosing to platform on DC/OS, which now has over 100 integrated services — a 5x increase from one year ago. Mesosphere today also announced the addition of the popular Nexus Repository from Sonatype to help developers ship applications faster. Mesosphere continues its open source commitment, collaborating on a new specification for storage known as Container Storage Interface (CSI), along with Docker, Dell Technologies, Google and Pivotal.

"Independent software vendors have rallied behind Mesosphere DC/OS to provide our customers with an amazing ecosystem of products and platform services that are fueling a seismic shift in how modern applications are developed and deployed," said Florian Leibert, CEO and co-founder of Mesosphere. "DC/OS has quickly become a concentrated center for innovation and integrated capabilities, and interest from customers and partners is accelerating."

Growing Adoption

Companies increasingly want to avoid reliance on a single provider to power modern applications and are looking at hybrid cloud or multi-cloud configurations. Modern applications require data services, and using proprietary or cloud-specific data services reduces flexibility.  Mesosphere DC/OS gives companies the ability to use their data services of choice, and run them on any datacenter or cloud, from any provider.

These unique attributes have resulted in more than 100,000 clusters launched with DC/OS to run containers and data services elastically together on datacenter and cloud infrastructures, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon and Google.

"We chose to work with Mesosphere because we fundamentally believe in the open source DC/OS approach to distributed computing," said Mark Brewer, president and CEO of Lightbend. "The tight integration with various platform services, ease of deployment, and flexible scalability for operations across clouds offers a compelling value proposition that meets our needs and those of our customers."

Integrated Data Services Create Robust DC/OS Ecosystem

With more than 100 integrated services, Mesosphere DC/OS is the leading next generation platform for integrated data services, roviding users a broad ecosystem of capabilities. The latest DC/OS service addition is the Nexus Repository from Sonatype, enabling companies to effectively organize, store and distribute software components to support DevOps and CI/CD toolchains.

Nexus Repository is the first to offer DC/OS users a free, private registry for Docker containers in addition to enterprise-scale artifact management for the most popular development languages. Artifact repositories enable faster collaboration by ensuring developers are using the right software libraries, leading to better security and higher quality applications.

Nexus Repository also includes two component intelligence options, Repository Health Check and Application Health Check. Each provides a detailed list of security vulnerabilities and license compliance issues for any open source components found inside Nexus repositories or applications stored within.

"Like Mesosphere DC/OS, we architected the Nexus platform to meet the demands of a DevOps-native world," said Wayne Jackson, CEO of Sonatype. "Nexus is remarkably scalable, enabling organizations using DC/OS to not only go faster but to be more secure as they deliver new innovations to market."

Committed to Open Source

The Mesosphere commitment to open source began with our founder's co-creation of Apache Mesos, and our contributions continue to help bring cutting edge technologies to every developer. We founded the open source DC/OS project with 60 partners a year ago to bring the power of Mesos to the broader community. The DC/OS project includes key components like Apache Mesos and Marathon. Mesosphere has also made continued contributions to related projects like Apache Spark and Kubernetes.

An additional area that is in need of open source collaboration is container storage. With no storage interface standard, each of the leading solutions providing container orchestration — Mesosphere DC/OS, Cloud Foundry, Docker and Kubernetes — manage storage differently. These implementations have different design criteria and incompatible APIs, resulting in fragmented storage ecosystem complicating the integration task for storage vendors and users. Working closely with industry leaders including Docker, Dell Technologies, Google and Pivotal, Mesosphere is leading a collaborative open source development effort to develop a Container Storage Interface. The goal with CSI is to provide a standard interface for container orchestration solutions to handle storage and enable storage vendors to write one plugin that works with all container orchestration platforms.

"Each of the leading container orchestration solutions currently have their own way of handling storage, with their own API and implementation," said Edwin Yuen, an industry analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "Similar in nature to the Container Networking Interface, what Mesosphere and several leading companies are proposing with CSI is what the industry needs to standardize and open source storage interfaces. CSI would help tremendously as applications could then be written for storage portability across platforms and hosting environments."

"Container technology has huge potential to ignite new applications and greater productivity," said Joshua Bernstein, vice president of technology at Dell Technologies. "However, the storage ecosystem today is fragmented. To achieve this potential requires common interfaces and CSI is a big step towards achieving that for container storage. This will ease application development and implementation, as well as improve data mobility."

New O'Reilly Book on DC/OS

The company also announced the release of the first book on Mesosphere DC/OS from O'Reilly: Application Delivery with DC/OS: Building and Running Modern Data-Driven Apps. Modern applications are distributed systems composed of containerized microservices and big data services. This eBook outlines the infrastructure and application requirements of this new architecture, and describes in detail how DC/OS can be used to build and run these applications with ease.
