Blackboard Promotes The Creation Of Inclusive Online Learning Environments At 32nd Annual CSUN Conference


WASHINGTON, Feb. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of Blackboard's continued commitment to creating truly inclusive experiences in education, several of the company's experts will share knowledge and best practices around accessibility in education during the 32nd CSUN Assistive Technology Conference, being held February 27 to March 4 in San Diego. During multiple presentations led by Blackboard leaders and its institutional partners, conference participants will learn practical strategies that they can implement at their own institution to create more inclusive educational experiences for all learners.

Among the topics explored during these presentations will be strategies for motivating developers to build accessible technologies; trends and patterns in the accessibility of course content; and accessibility improvements to Moodlerooms.

Wednesday, March 1


9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 

What's New with Accessibility @Moodle, presented by Jason Hardin, ?Senior Product Manager at Blackboard, Marlene Zentz, Senior Instructional Designer and Accessibility Specialist at the University of Montana, and Aaron Page, Accessibility Specialist at the University of Montana. Attendees will hear how Blackboard and the University of Montana collaborated to develop new, innovative accessibility and usability improvements to Moodlerooms, Blackboard's open-source based platform. 3:20 p.m. – 4:20 p.m.  

Motivating Developers: A three-part solution, presented by JoAnna Hunt, Accessibility Manager at Blackboard and Heidi Jungel, Accessibility Engineer at Blackboard. During this session, Hunt and Jungel will offer strategies for motivating developers to build technology that meets the needs of diverse learners. (Location: Gaslamp AB, 2nd floor, Seaport Tower)


Thursday, March 2


4:20 p.m. – 5:20 p.m.     

Unpacking course content accessibility: insights, trends and case studies, presented by Nicolaas Matthijs, Senior Engineering Manager at Blackboard, and Ryan DiGiondomenico, Senior Manager of Design, Development, & Accessibility at the Berkeley Resource Center for Online Education. This session will bring together data across many types of institutions and provide insight into the current state of affairs in course content accessibility, the trends and patterns across institutions, and practical ways in which attendees can start understanding and tackling the problem at their institution. (Location: Gaslamp AB, 2nd floor, Seaport Tower)
