Zayo Helps Fans Stay Connected at Super Bowl 51

Two wireless carriers selected Zayo Group (News - Alert) Holdings, Inc. (Zayo) to add wireless capacity in Houston for Super Bowl 51. Zayo completed installation of more than 120 small cell sites, including locations around key venues like NRG Stadium and Discovery Green Park, ahead of the projected increase in demand. The sites are part of larger projects to add more than 700 sites throughout the Houston metropolitan area.

The Super Bowl and the associated events drew more than 1 million people to Houston over a 10-day period, which approximately doubled wireless demand in the city. Wireless traffic ramped all week and spiked during the game. Fans at Super Bowl 51 were able to successfully share messages, photos and videos over their mobile phones, thanks in part to the deployments.

Small cell technology is increasingly being used to boost network capacity so wireless carriers can keep up with the accelerating demand for bandwidth, especially in dense metro areas. Zayo's small cell solutions include fiber backhaul and fronthaul, as well as full turnkey implementation, including RF design, site acquisition, permitting and installation of equipment. The installations are providing enhanced mobile coverage, capacity, and speed in high-usage areas.

"We were able to complete the install of these sites to keep Super Bowl fans connected and to provide a long-term solution for the wireless demand in this growing city," said Randy Brogle, vice president, Dark Fiber Solutions, South Region at Zayo. "We are proud to partner with the City of Houston, its management districts, and a team of local contrators and employees to develop permanent communications infrastructure that will improve the connectivity for Houston residents for a long time to come. We look forward to completing these projects in 2017 and further expanding the benefits of small cell technology around the entire Houston metropolitan area."
