EXPERT ALERTS:

Effectiveness of Super Bowl Ads
Jessica Li
Assistant Professor of Marketing
University of Kansas, School of Business
"The discussion of how expensive Super Bowl ads have become has to be couched in terms of consumer viewing of media. Sporting events are one of the few programs that people still watch live because so many people use the DVR or streaming services like Netflix for entertainment."
Li's research focuses on marketing and consumer behavior -- in particular, motivation, emotion, social influence and persuasion. She can address the effectiveness of Super Bowl ads in both their resonance with consumer and whether that translates into business success. She has written several peer-reviewed journal articles on marketing and consumer behavior, including a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research on the effect of smiling big in online marketing ads.

How Brands and Consumers Are Navigating Issues in the Political Climate
Noelle Nelson
Assistant Professor of Marketing and Consumer Behavior
University of Kansas, School of Business
"It's unusual in that consumers are demanding that companies have a 'position' on all things political right now. So, people are paying close attention to every action or communication a company makes, and even a misinterpretation of information -- like perhaps what happened with Uber -- can be detrimental. Companies are having to navigate this heightened consumer attention environment, and they need to more closely analyze all public communication."
Nelson can address how brands and consumers are approaching and navigating issues in this political climate, including recent responses to Uber and Starbucks on social media in wake of Donald Trump's immigration executive order. Nelson's broad research portfolio includes studying working memory and negative effect in consumer behavior. She has written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles that focus on consumer behavior.

How Both President Obama and President Trump Use Social Media Effectively
Charles Palmer
Executive Director, Center for Advanced Entertainment & Learning Technologies
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
President Obama used social media to organize a grassroots effort that led to his election and re-election. President Trump uses it to control the narrative. Both use it very effectively. Says Palmer: "Twitter had a troublesome year with the exit of its COO and CTO and a declining user base. But President Trump's use of the platform has brought a new life to the tool. The company now needs to figure out how to convert non-users to the platform. This is a golden opportunity, they need to show the average person that it's not about tweeting. The real use of the tool is following news sources and influential news makers to stay connected in ways that other platforms can't."

Palmer oversees the design and development of ventures in new and emerging technologies, serves as the Program Lead for the undergraduate Interactive Media program, is an adviser to the Learning Technology Masters of Science program, coordinates the High School Gaming Academy, and mentors students on research projects in the fields of augmented and virtual reality, mobile computing, web application development, video production, desktop manufacturing (3D printing), motion graphics and interactive games. As a technologist, author and international speaker, Palmer lectures on virtual reality, 3D printing, gamification, and simulations linking learning and research to practical outcomes.

Financial Effects of Cancer Treatment
Samantha Watson
Founder and CEO
The Samfund
"Financial burden leads people to delay medical care, skip follow-ups, and stop taking medications. This is especially true for young adults because of their age, lack of employment history, low savings, and/or limited support from parents."
Based in Boston, Watson is available to discuss the financial effects of cancer treatment, and young adult cancer survivorship. She is a contributing writer for Cure Magazine, Cancer.net, The American Journal of Managed Care, and others.

Making Data Smarter
Andrew J. Hacker
Cybersecurity Expert in Residence
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology
Hacker plugs away at making data smarter, something he believes holds great promise for fields like health care, urban planning and industrial controls, among others: "Say one sensor showed that a motor in the factory was about to fail. The data warning of a problem would have to flow to the central control system, which would then have to read it before deciding whether to shut off the motor. And then a signal would have to travel back to the motor. A sensor producing smart data could decide on its own to shut off the motor, saving precious seconds and sparing costly equipment – not to mention people – from unnecessary damage." In health care, a smart medical record could hold all the information about a patient but restrict access to it based on who's asking for it. A doctor would enjoy a different level of access to the record than would a researcher or an insurance carrier. Adds Hacker: "That's a holy grail of cybersecurity, being able to secure individual bits of data."
Hacker is the former deputy chief information security officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where for six years he supported the Enterprise Information Security Office in managing information security, guiding state agency CISOs and executives, interacting with state and federal partners, and protecting citizen data and government systems and operations. He played a major role in creating enterprise security strategies, standards and policies, enhancing overall application security, and was responsible for risk management and compliance across the commonwealth. Prior to his appointment at the commonwealth, Hacker served as global security practice head for a global IT consulting firm, where he built a practice organization spanning multiple geographies and fostered a highly skilled and influential security Center of Excellence. Hacker has worked for large IT thought-leaders and service providers, such as VeriSign, Verizon Business, and AT&T, and has a deep understanding of enterprise security technologies, architecture, policy and governance. He has authored editorials appearing in publications such as Network World, Information Week, and Help Net Security. Hacker holds numerous industry certifications, including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Information Systems Security Architecture Professional (ISSAP), Certified Government Chief Information Officer (CGCIO), and is a former Payment Card Industry Qualified Security Assessor (PCI QSA).
