On January 19, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission revealed that Western Union admitted to "aiding and abetting wire fraud" by allowing illegal money transfers to benefit human traffickers, money laundering schemes, and otherwise enable the transfer of "dirty money."

Western Union further admitted that agents were hiding money laundering transactions to avoid getting caught. Western Union has agreed on a $586 million settlement.
