PBS Announces New Programming During Winter 2017 TCA Session


Today at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, PBS announced new programs and initiatives launching in 2017 and beyond. A brief synopsis of each program is listed below, along with links to the full press releases.

PBS AND STATIONS LAUNCH 24/7 PBS KIDS CHANNEL, EXPANDING ACCESS TO THE #1 CHILDREN'S EDUCATIONAL MEDIA BRAND ON TV AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS

The nation's most trusted provider of educational media for children, will launch the first-ever national 24/7 PBS KIDS channel, provided by member stations across the country on TV and via live streaming on digital platforms. The free service, which will feature 24/7 educational programming, ensures that PBS KIDS' high-quality content is available to all children and caregivers on a platform and at a time that works for them, including primetime, weekends and other out-of-school times when they are most likely to tune in. One hundred eight PBS licenseesĀ are expected to launch the PBS KIDS channel on TV by the end of the year, making it available to 90 percent of U.S. TV households.

PBS Series NOVA Shares the Great American Solar Eclipse with Audiences across the U.S. in Special Day-of-Event Presentation

NOVA "Solar Eclipse" (w.t.) is a new program from PBS' award-winning science series NOVA, produced by WGBH Boston. On Monday, August 21, 2017, America's eyes will be glued to the skies as the mainland United States experiences the first total solar eclipse since 1979. NOVA will capture the spectacular event in a special presentation to air hours after it takes place.

PBS and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios Celebrate 40th Anniversary of NASA Voyager Launch in "THE FARTHEST" (w.t.)

THE FARTHEST (w.t.) is a two-hour documentary that spotlights the extrordinary success story of NASA's Voyager mission, which began 40 years ago this August. The twin Voyager spacecraft revolutionized planetary science, resolved key questions about the outer planets and raised intriguing new ones about the evolution of our solar system. THE FARTHEST (w.t.) will celebrate these magnificent machines, the men and women who built them, and the vision that propelled them farther than anyone could ever have hoped.



PBS and Time Inc. Announce BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE; Part Two of the A YEAR IN SPACE Specials Premieres November 2017

BEYOND A YEAR IN SPACE, a follow-up documentary to 2016's A YEAR IN SPACE special, is scheduled to premiere on PBS in November 2017. The two specials, adapted from TIME's original digital video series about astronaut Scott Kelly's 12-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS), explore the human limitations for space travel and what a mission to Mars will require.

History, Science and Nature Programming Includes THE STORY OF CHINA, BIG PACIFIC (w.t.), RARE - CREATURES OF THE PHOTO ARK and More

PBS Summer of Adventure includes six new limited series that take viewers to some of the world's most amazing places and cultures. Titles include: THE STORY OF CHINA, BIG PACIFIC (w.t.), RARE - CREATURES OF THE PHOTO ARK, WEEKEND IN HAVANA (w.t.), NATURE'S GREAT RACE, and GREAT YELLOWSTONE THAW.
