CES 2017: Automotive Grade Linux OTA Solution Ready for Renesas R-Car platform

LAS VEGAS, January 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --

Hagiwara Electric Co.,Ltd. from Japan and ATS Advanced Telematic Systems from Germany will demonstrate the integration of an open source-based over-the-air (OTA) software update solution into the Renesas R-Car platform. The jointly developed proof of concept will be presented at a GENIVI showcase event during CES 2017. ATS OTA Plus is integrated with Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a project of The Linux Foundation dedicated to creating open source software solutions for automotive applications. The Renesas Electronics Corporation from Japan is one of the world's leading automotive semiconductor manufacturers.

"Together with our partner ATS, we have developed a software implementation to embed ATS's server/client OTA solution into Renesas Electronics's 'R-Car' IVI SoC for connected cars. Based on this proof of concept, we will start building open source system-level technology for our automotive-embedded 'R-Car' series," says Shigenobu Ishikawa, Director of Technology Center, Hagiwara Electric. "Having the support of chipset manufacturers and distributors to integrate AGL, GENIVI and ATS's technology into automotive-grade hardware demonstrates the increasing traction of open source in the industry," says Arthur Taylor, CTO of ATS Advanced Telematic Systems.

Secure over-the-air software updating based on open standards and open source technology

ATS is the developer of OTA Plus, a completely secure suite for over-the-air software updating, including management of package campaign creation, data transfer and traffic shaping, dependency tracking and resolution, security, and installation and validation of packages. All of the most important components are open source, with a fully transparent development process. The development of OTA Plus began as a

collaboration between the members of the GENIVI Alliance, a non-profit industry alliance of leading automotiv OEMs and suppliers committed to driving the broad adoption of specified, open source In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) software. Among the members of GENIVI are the car makers Volvo, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover, as well as leading suppliers, such as Bosch and Continental. ATS has recently debuted ATS Garage, the first automotive-grade SaaS platform that is open source and specifically designed for the mobility market. The platform provides OEM labs, SMEs, research facilities, and new mobility startups with free access to ready-to-use, cloud-based software services.

ATS is also a member of Automotive Grade Linux, a collaborative open source project to accelerate the development and adoption of a fully open software stack for the connected car. The AGL community consists of close to 90 companies, including nine automakers, and recently released the most advanced version to date of its AGL infotainment platform.
