Sun Capital Partners Foundation, Inc. Awards $75,000 Grant To Non-Profit Domestic Violence Center Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc.

Sun Capital Partners Foundation, Inc. ("The Foundation"), today announced that it has selected Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. ("Women In Distress") to receive a $75,000 grant. Women In Distress is the only nationally accredited, and state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving in the area.

Women In Distress's mission is to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education and advocacy. The dedicated team at Women In Distress has developed several services and initiatives to help accomplish this mission, including a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelters, counseling, support groups and professional trainings to educate the community on domestic violence.

"Women In Distress performs vital services for women, men and families in our region," said Marc Leder, Co-CEO of Sun Capital Partners and President of The Foundation. "Domestic violence is shockingly pervasive across the country, and the hotline, shelter, counseling, and educational outreach offered by Women In Distress and centers like it offer critical support to help people escape and prevent abuse."

Women In Distress originally opened in July, 1974 in a four bedroom home, as Broward County's first shelter for abused women and children. Today, Women In Distress operates a 132-ed shelter, an outreach center (Jim & Jan Moran Family Center), satellite outreach centers in Broward County and a thrift store that serves both program participants and the community. Women In Distress believes that each survivor of domestic violence has the right to a safe, secure home and the capability to self-determine their violence free future. Last year, Women In Distress provided 29,973 safe shelter nights and more than 22,000 hours of counseling for adults and children.

There is more work to be done: a woman is assaulted in the US every nine seconds. Every minute, nearly 20 people are abused by a domestic partner, and 1,300 people will die as a result of this violence in the next year.

Marc J. Leder and Rodger R. Krouse, founders of Sun Capital Partners, started The Foundation with the belief that success brings with it a responsibility to make a difference in local communities. By supporting innovative non-profit organizations, The Foundation aims to fulfill its mission of promoting sustainable and positive change. The Foundation's Charity Committee carefully evaluates potential charitable partners to ensure the funding the Foundation provides is deployed effectively and has a meaningful impact.

The Foundation serves to enhance Sun Capital's strong culture of social engagement and giving back. Previous grant recipients include HANDY ("Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth"), Boca Helping Hands, SOS (News - Alert) Children's Villages, and the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.
