Governor Brown Reappoints George Halvorson and Muntu Davis to First 5 California CommissionToday, California Governor Jerry Brown announced the reappointment of George Halvorson and Dr. Muntu Davis to the California Children and Families Commission, also known as First 5 California. Commissioners Halvorson and Davis gladly accepted reappointment to the First 5 California, which is viewed as a nationwide leader in early learning and child care programs for children ages 0 to 5. Commissioner Halvorson was first appointed by Governor Brown to chair First 5 California in May 2013. During his tenure, Commissioner Halvorson helped spearhead the award-winning Talk. Read. Sing® campaign, which encourages early engagement between parents and their children from birth, in order to help build and strengthen brain connections in children. As the former chair and CEO of Kaiser Permanente and president and CEO of Health Partners (Minnesota), Commissioner Halvorson brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Commission. He is a published author and his latest book, the well-received Three Key Years, focuses on the science and benefits associated with exercising children's brains at the youngest ages. Dr. Davis is the Public Health Department Director and County Health Officer for Alameda County, California. His reappointment helpsthe Commission maintain its high-level commitment to children and their well-being. As the top medical professional in Alameda County, Dr. Davis has formed a strong alliance with local governments, including acting as an advisor to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and other community organizations. Dr. Davis is a leader in strategic planning, the development and implementation of public health policy and practices, and fiscal management. He has held multiple positions at the Continuity of Instruction to Reinforce Our Children's Learning Environment (C.I.R.C.L.E.) program at the Tom Bradley Elementary School and received both his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
