A CALL TO MEN and the New York Women's Foundation Host Third Training Institute in New York to Educate Men on Healthy, Respectful Manhood and Prevent Violence against All Women and Girls

A CALL TO MEN and The New York Women's Foundation hosted a two-day Training Institute in New York on December 5-6, 2016. The Institute provided advanced training on engaging men and boys in preventing violence and discrimination against all women and girls, and educating them on healthy, respectful manhood. Attendees included a diverse mix of primarily New York-based nonprofits, including The Center for Anti-Violence Education, Safe Horizon, the New York City Department of Probation, the African-American Policy Forum and many others. This is the third Training Institute funded by the New York Women's Foundation and led by A CALL TO MEN, a national violence prevention organization.

"The New York Women's Foundation's commitment to engaging men is sparking grassroots change and violence prevention in families, schools and communities throughout New York," said Ted Bunch, co-founder of A CALL TO MEN.

A CALL TO MEN designs the Institutes to deconstruct the collective socialization of men and give intimate and in-depth education on healthy, respectful manhood. Research by the World Health Organization shows that men and boys who adhere to rigid, traditional notions of gender roles and masculinity are more likely to report having used violence against a partner. If men embrace a healthy, respectful manhood, many social ills - from domestic violence and sexual assault to bullying and discrimination - would drastically decrease.

"A CALL TO MEN meets men and women where they are, modeling loving, respectful and accountable interactions. Our partnership has allowed us to engage men in our work to end violence against all women and girls," said Ana Oliveira, president & CEO of The New York Women's Foundation. "Attendees gain practical approaches and tools for violence prevention and heightened self-awareness for immediate impact in their families and communities."

Topics covered include: the history of movement building in the United States, male socialization and its intersection with violence against women, the intersections of oppression, the politics of accountability, hope and healing for men, and community organizing.

"The conceptualization of the man box and the ways toxic masculinity permeate society have further deepened my desire to work with men and boys in my community and in general," said Yumnah Syed, youth empowerment program advocate, Sakhi for South Asian Women.
