Cloudinary Extends Its End-to-End Image and Video Management Solution With New Best-in-Class Media Delivery Capabilities

AWS re:invent 2016 - Known for its easy-to-use media management solution, Cloudinary today strengthened its leadership position with the integration of best-in-class content delivery networks (CDNs) to ensure images and videos are delivered quickly and reliably, based on each user's unique needs. By enabling intelligent delivery of images and videos across multiple CDNs, Cloudinary can choose the best-performing CDN, based on the features and delivery speed required by customers. The new functionality eliminates the hassles developers face when tasked with choosing and managing CDNs.

"Our end-to-end solution has offered an easy, efficient way for developers to manage images and videos, from upload to delivery," said Itai Lahan, CEO and co-founder of Cloudinary. "Up until now, delivery was only available across a single top-tier CDN. With our newest offering, we expand delivery options for our users to include multiple CDNs. This enhancement makes developers' jobs even easier by greatly improving media management capabilities at a time when the media landscape is growing in complexity."

Images account for more than 60 percent of downloaded content. As a result, web developers must find a way to optimize this content to ensure top-notch performance for their sites. Cloudinary's cloud-based media management tool has long been the solution of choice for optimizing images, enabling customers to serve the best resolution, format and quality for each end user.

But image optimization is only one part o the equation. Developers also need to ensure efficient delivery of media, as measured by availability, latency and throughput. CDNs move content closer to end users, helping to improve delivery. However, each CDN may have strengths in specific geographic areas and different performance based on location of the end user, time of day or type of content.

Businesses that operate websites with truly global reach and scale often adopt a multi-CDN strategy. But managing several CDNs themselves introduce many challenges. Integrating multiple CDNs can be time consuming and distracts developers from their core jobs by adding another level of management complexity for CDN maintenance and administration. Plus, it increases costs, since businesses must enter separate vendor contracts for each CDN.

Cloudinary's multi-CDN capabilities eliminate these challenges, creating a large, globally distributed network that is optimized for availability and geographic reach. It provides real-time access to best-in-breed global CDNs, improving delivery performance, availability and scalability worldwide, which are vital for improving user experience and engagement. With real-time monitoring and performance data, Cloudinary dynamically switches between CDN providers to ensure that content is served from the most suitable source, without any operational overhead or actions by the website owner.

Cloudinary's multi-CDN offering now supports Akamai (News - Alert), Fastly and CloudFront, with plans to add other CDNs in the future.

The multi-CDN solution is available now for customers of select plans. For more information or to see if you qualify for multi-CDN delivery, read our new blog post.
