Emerging Markets Data Centre - from 2016 to 2021

LONDON, Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Extensively revised since the 2015 edition, the new report now includes a survey of the major BRI markets of Brazil, Russia & India along with the fast developing markets of Bulgaria, Mexico, South Africa and Turkey. It also includes the new emerging African markets of Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria – and provides a unique comparison of some 10 Country Markets in total.

In the research for the report, TCL has surveyed almost 200 Data Centre Providers with over 350 facilities across the ten countries. TCL forecasts that these countries will account for over 500,000 m2 of Data Centre raised floor space and over 700 MW of Data Centre Customer Power (DCCP) as of the end of 2016.

The key Data Centre trends identified by TCL include the following:

- The development of new Carrier Neutral Data Centre facilities: Increasingly Data Centre markets are evolving into regional clusters with their own ecosystem of connectivity. Higher densities of power per m2 are being provided, with higher specifications of Data Centre facility established to cater for cloud services. Carrier Neutral Data Centre facilities are the latest part of the Data Centre ecosystem to be developed.

- New Data Centre developments are frequently part of a wider Government strategy: Some countries are now developing new Data Centre facilities as part of a strategy of providing national hosting and connectivity, with personal data to be housed within the Country. In September 2015 for example, the Russian Government passed a law to ensure that all personal digital data is be contained within Russia. And state-owned nuclear operator Rosenergyatom has announced plans to build a large facility in Eastern Siberia and En+ Group, as part of a consortium with Chinese investors, has announced that it is to build a new facility North of Moscow.

- Migration of IT applications to 3rd Party Data Centre facilities: With the introduction of new 3rd party Data Centre capacity, the Data Centre Provider now faces the challenge of migrating enterprise and Government IT applications from overseas and self-built Data Centre facilities to in-country hosting & colocation services – this is particularly the case in Africa.

- India now accounts for 40 per cent of all Data Centre capacity in the survey: India is the largest Data Centre market in the Country, with over 200,000 m2 of Data Centre raised floor space forecast as of the end of 2016. The majority of Indian Data Centre capacity is situated in Data Centre clusters around Mumbai and Bangalore – although clusters are also being created in the cities of New Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Hydrabad & Kolkata. Data Centre Providers with multiple facilities – including NTT Com/Netmagic, BSNL, Reliance IDC, Bharti Airtel and Sify – also account for the majority of space.

- Mexico is the 2nd largest Data Centre market in the survey: Mexico is the 2nd largest market after India in the survey, with almost 114,000 m2 of DataCentre raised floor space. But the Mexican market is almost three times the size of the Brazilian market, despite the larger economy of Brazil – with Mexican IT services provider KIO Networks dominating the Data Centre market in Mexico.

- Turkey is entering a new phase of Data Centre growth: The Turkish Data Centre market is entering a new phase of growth with the launch of the Zenium Data Centre facility, providing wholesale services, with some three times the total space of its nearest rival – sharply boosting the total capacity available in Turkey.

- Africa is seeing new Carrier Neutral Data Centre facilities being launched: The three African Countries of Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria are launching new Carrier Neutral Data Centre facilities for the first time, and are following the leading Country Market in the continent, South Africa.

In total TCL forecasts that the 10 Emerging Country Markets above will account for over 500,000 m2 of Data Centre raised floor space and over 700 MW of Data Centre Customer Power (DCCP) in total. The forecast is based on a unique research of almost 200 Data Centre Providers with over 350 Data Centre facilities as of the end of 2016. And the most common Data Centre business model is the Telecoms Provider followed by the Hosting Provider & the Carrier Neutral Data Centre specialist.

The increase in Data Centre capacity and power means that there will be a brake on the growth in Emerging Market Data Centre pricing over the 5 year period to the end of 2021 - with an overall increase of some 5 per cent forecast for the period – as 3rd party Data Centre providers will be required to demonstrate a tangible cost saving.

Scope of the Report

The TCL Emerging Markets Data Centre – from 2016 to 2021 report is an extensively revised report based on the last TCL Emerging Markets Data Centre – 2015 to 2020 report - which was first published in early 2015.

This 2016 version of the report has been extensively revised - with seven large new country markets added - including the markets of: Brazil, Ghana, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria & South Africa.

All of the new Country Markets have been selected on the amount of potential forecast future growth coupled with the arrival of new Carrier Neutral Data Centre specialists as a sign of market maturity. New Carrier Neutral Data Centre facilities are developed as the IT segment reaches maturity, with the initial Data Centre facilities typically being Carrier Based (Telecoms Provider) facilities.

TCL has also updated the profiles for the Bulgaria, Russia, South Africa and Turkey country markets, which remain in the report from 2015. However, TCL has omitted the smaller Data Centre Country Markets of Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and the Ukraine from the 2016 report, the information on these markets will be part of the Appendix.

The forecasts for Data Centre space and pricing in the report are based on a "bottom up" approach. Every known Data Centre provider in each country has been included in the research analysis to provide a total base line Data Centre raised floor capacity and Data Centre Customer Power (in m2 and MW respectively) and with pricing for each country market.

Altogether almost 200 Data Centre providers of rack space are included in the TCL survey across the 10 countries – with approximately 353 identified Data Centre facilities included altogether (as some Data Centre operators have multiple facilities in some countries) with a total of over 502,000 m2 of Data Centre raised floor space and 702 MW of Data Centre Customer Power (DCCP) as of the end of 2016.
