Encore Networks Readies for Verizon's Deployment of LTE Category M1

As a follow on to Verizon's September announcement to become the first U.S. operator to commercially launch LTE Category M1 services (CAT M1) in late 2016, Encore Networks (News - Alert) today announced that it has partnered with Verizon and Sequans to develop the first CAT M1 LTE router designed for low-cost cellular connectivity of IoT devices requiring low power consumption and utilizing low bandwidth.

ENM-Class routers will support Verizon's LTE (News - Alert) network and will utilize Sequans' Monarch LTE chip for narrowband IoT applications. Encore's ENM-Class LTE routers will provide customers with network longevity and more robust security, enabling a cost-effective migration path for existing IoT deployments to move from legacy 2G devices that are at the end of the serviceable lifetime.

The chip inside Encore's EN M-Class routers is Sequans' Monarch LTE platform, the world's first CAT M1/NB1 solution, integrating baseband, RF, power management and memory in a single chip. Monarch is fully optimized in hardware and software and is purpose built for narrowband LTE for IoT applications.

"CAT M1 competes in low-data connectivity markets such as ATMs, refrigeration, HVAC, monitoring and sensing devices and garage door monitoring providing more reliable network coverage in buildings and underground at lower power requirements. Until now, ultra low bandwidth connectivity was a major concern in critical applications like hospitals, alarm systems and POS systems," stated Tom Kittle, Sales Director for Encore Networks. "One of the benefits of CAT M1 is its narrow bandwidth requirements which improves the efficiency of the cellular spectrum and expands the range of available cellular services. This increased efficiency allows for the effective deployment of CAT M1 routers into non-traditional networks typically served by aging wire-line and 2G cellular solutions."

"Encore Networks is a long-standing device partner in the IoT space, being an early driver of Verizon's (News - Alert) LTE technologies CAT 3, CAT 1, and now CAT M1," said Chris Schmidt, Executive Director Device Technology at Verizon. "We are excited to continue our relationship with Encore as they develop cost effective solutions for our customers which solves for many low bandwidth use cases requiring low power consumption and takes advantage of Verizon's LTE network."

"After working together successfully on Encore's LTE CAT 1 router last year, we are excited to extend our partnership to these new CAT M1 routers," said Craig Miller (News - Alert), Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Sequans. "Encore is dedicated to providing feature-rich LTE routers that make it easy and cost-effective for their M2M and IoT customers to transition from 2G to 4G, cost-effectively."
