Dermatology Group Offers Free Online Consultations to Combat Acne Bullying

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bullying is a serious issue in many schools, and it can take on many different forms. Teasing, hitting, spreading rumors, leaving kids out and cyberbullying are just a few examples. Unfortunately, kids that are bullied have a hard time standing up for themselves, and they feel sad, lonely and even depressed. Most of these kids have low self esteem and have few friends. Many kids, specially high school students, are also bullied for their skin conditions, most commonly acne.

"As a kid, I always had bad acne and was made fun of," explains Santa Monica based Dermatologist Ben Behnam MD, founder of an online dermatology group DermCheck Dermatology. "Many people feel that if you have acne on your face, you must not have a healthy lifestyle. This is not true but when you are a high school student, you believe it."

In an effort to curb acne bullying in schools, DermCheck Dermatology has partnered up with PACER and ot In Our Town (NOIT), two non-profit organizations, to promote National Bullying Prevention Month. DermCheck will offer free dermatology consultations to anyone in California struggling with acne, especially high school students. "The goal is to end acne in high schools. Less acne means less bullying, which means more self confidence," explains Ben Behnam MD. By offering a free dermatology visit, Californians can use the service to see an online dermatologist and get prescriptions sent electronically to their pharmacy. To get the free visit, users must use the promo code "stopbullying" when checking out at www.dermcheckapp.com.

Not In Our Town will host Bullying Prevention Month Online Film Festivals, where for each day of the month NOIT will launch a short film about standing up to bullying and intolerance. The festival includes a range of films that showcase the incredible energy and enthusiasm of young people taking a stand against bullying, anti-gay bigotry, and all forms of hate.

Throughout the community, there are nonprofits, schools, and community groups that directly collaborate with PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center sharing resources — such as classroom toolkits, free bookmarks, awareness raising ideas, petition signing — to directly engage, educate and empower students. Every year, PACER publishes a list of organizations that help promote bullying prevention in the community. The list can be found on PACER's "Become a Champion Against Bullying" page.

"I wish I had never experienced being bullied for my acne when I was younger, but with organizations like NOIT and PACER, we have a much better chance at preventing bullying from happening in our schools today," explains Ben Behnam.
