Starting Vehicles in the Cold

LOWELL, Ark., Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Purkeys, a company focused on providing electrical solutions for the heavy-duty trucking industry, wants to arm fleets with the tools and knowledge to combat the climate and charge through the cold.

There are three things fleets need to maintain their vehicles in cold conditions. The first is to make sure technicians have the proper equipment needed to test vehicle electrical systems. The second is to properly train technicians to perform the right test and get accurate results. The third is to have the right processes and procedures in place so properly equipped and trained technicians can easily maintain heavy-duty vehicles.

It is harder to start vehicles in the cold, because the energy requirements to crank an engine increase, while the battery's abiity to produce energy decreases.

Battery packs provide sufficient energy to start the engine. If the requirement of the engine exceeds what a battery pack can provide, the truck will crank slower or not at all. This is called a "no start condition."

As temperatures drop, vehicle energy requirements go up, mainly because of engine oil viscosity. Viscosity refers to the thickness or consistency of a fluid. Lower temperatures make the oil thicker, which makes the engine harder to crank.

Additionally, cold temperatures can decrease the amount of current produced by batteries. Batteries produce energy from a chemical reaction; as temperatures drop, so does the reaction rate. This contributes to batteries producing less energy; if batteries don't produce enough energy to meet the cranking requirements, the vehicle will have trouble starting.
