Coriant Expands Packet Networking Capabilities of 7100 Platform with New 100G Interface Module

Coriant (News - Alert), a global supplier of SDN-enabled end-to-end packet optical networking solutions, today announced it has expanded its metro packet optical networking solutions with the availability of a new packet switching module for the industry-leading Coriant® 7100 Packet Optical Transport Platform. The new PSM-2C module adds 100G client and DWDM line-side interfaces to the packet switching features on the 7100 Nano and extends packet switching capabilities to the Coriant® 7100 Pico. When combined with the 10G and 1G capabilities of the PSM-2S module, the 7100 solution lowers capital expense up to 25% by converging packet and optical transport in metro networks to deliver packet services and applications, including Business Ethernet, broadband aggregation, mobile backhaul, and enterprise cloud interconnect.

According to Ovum (News - Alert), the global Ethernet services market is projected to exceed US$70 billion by the year 2020, with end-user service requirements driving increased demand for Ethernet bandwidth to more end nodes and locations. These market trends are also driving new feature requirements for packet optical infrastructure designed to reduce operations costs and increase service efficiency, flexibility, and reliability.

The next-generation PSM-2C enhances the packet switching capabilities of the 7100 platform, one of the most versatile and widely deployed packet optical transport solutions in the market. With the ability to support industry-leading packet switch density, the PSM-2C increases optical spectral efficiency by a factor of ten, optimizes scalability of the platform for hyper-growth applications with a 350% increase in DWDM capacity per module, and increases efficiency of router port hand-offs, router port density, and router fabric utilization. In addition to providing flexibility in both bandwidth and protocol scalability, the enhanced 7100 paket switching architecture supports up to 1.2 Tbps of interface capacity (including 100G interfaces) on the 7100 Nano (5RU form factor) and now enables up to 400G of packet switching and interface capacity on the 7100 Pico.

The Coriant family of packet switching modules supports a wide variety of service interfaces and maximizes architecture flexibility with simultaneous support for MPLS-TP, Connection-Oriented Ethernet (CoE) and Ethernet Bridging, including the use of static VPLS to interconnect these technologies. As a result, operators can reduce OpEx and CapEx in metro edge, regional, and core applications via more efficient, high-density Ethernet service aggregation and transport (1GbE, 10GbE, 100GbE), as well as with improved optimization of 100 GbE router port hand-offs.

"Coriant was first in the industry to offer 100G CE 2.0 certified products with our mTera universal switching platform, and now we have extended this 100G packet switching leadership into the 7100 portfolio," said Brian Nagle, Director of Product Line Management, Coriant. "Today's announcement expands the breadth of our end-to-end packet networking solutions, which span a wide variety of metro access, metro core, and regional transport infrastructure."
