"Children's Hospital Los Angeles is constantly striving to extend its mission of creating hope and building healthier futures, and expanding our nationally-ranked pediatric specialty care services in the South Bay community is a reflection of that," says Lara Khouri, MBA, MPH, senior vice president and chief strategy officer, Children's Hospital Los Angeles. "CHLA is proud of its reputation for hiring the brightest and most dedicated physicians, and with the expansion of staff and service lines in the South Bay clinic, we are able to serve more local families with our exceptional pediatric care."

The newest addition to the South Bay Outpatient Center is pediatric heart specialist Brandy Hattendorf, MD, FAAP, FACC, FASE. Dr. Hattendorf, who formerly served as medical director of non-invasive pediatric cardiology at Miller Children's and Women's Hospital Long Beach, is a pediatric cardiologist with specialized expertise in cardiac imaging to diagnose and treat prenatal, infant and pediatric patients with congenital heart defects or acquired heart disease. In conjunction with Dr. Hattendorf's arrival, the South Bay clinic has been equipped with a state-of-the-art cardiovascular ultrasound machine to better evaluate, diagnose and treat all forms of heart conditions, in addition to the electrocardiogram, X-ray and laboratory services already offered. A nationally recognized cardiologist, Dr. Hattendorf is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), American College of Cardiology (FACC) and American Society of Echocardiography (FASE), and holds national committee positions with the two latter organizations. She oins a stellar staff of CHLA South Bay cardiologists - Sarah Badran, MD; Pierre Wong, MD; and Arash Sabati, MD.

"Dr. Hattendorf brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, as well as for a familiarity with the South Bay community. We could not be more thrilled to have her on board to serve as the primary pediatric heart specialist on staff at the CHLA South Bay Outpatient Center," says Frank Ing, MD, chief of the Division of Cardiology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and co-director of the hospital's Heart Institute. "CHLA is ranked among the top 10 children's hospitals in the nation for pediatric heart care, and Dr. Hattendorf's presence in the South Bay ensures CHLA's brand of personalized care in cardiology will be available to families five days a week."

Meanwhile, hematology-oncology is the newest specialty care service to be offered at the South Bay clinic, adding six physicians - Jacquelyn Baskin, MD, MSc; Girish Dhall, MD; Cecilia Fu, MD; Josephine HaDuong, MD; Amanda Termuhlen, MD; and Guy Young, MD. CHLA's pediatric cancer center is consistently ranked as a top 10 pediatric specialty in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report, and the same quality of care is now available in the South Bay.

"We are thrilled that the expanding footprint of Children's Hospital Los Angeles' cancer reach will allow families to receive the best care available closer to home," said Amanda Termuhlen, MD, director of outreach services and medical director of inpatient services at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. "Children and teenagers with the most common form of pediatric leukemia can now receive checkups and maintenance chemotherapy here in the South Bay, and patients with other hematology and oncology diagnoses can have laboratory tests obtained and follow-up performed here as well."

Orthopaedics and endocrinology have also seen substantial growth. Due to high demand, the orthopaedics specialty created a walk-in clinic to make it even easier for patients to see CHLA specialists. The need for pediatric care in endocrinology is high as well, with physicians often booked up completely for the week. CHLA's orthopaedics and endocrinology programs are both ranked No. 8 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

The CHLA South Bay Outpatient Center provides the community with a medical facility staffed by 26 physicians with expertise in 12 pediatric specialties: cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, neurology, neuropsychology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, pulmonology and urology. The medical facility also offers specialized services in radiology and laboratory services, with a board-certified pathologist available for consultation at all times.
