.WEB Sells for $135 Million at Auction…Shattering all Records

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The auction to determine who gets to run the .WEB top level domain name has concluded with a $135 million price tag paid by Nu Dot Co, LLC. Prior to this auction, the highest public price for a new top level domain was $41.5 million, which GMO Registry paid for .shop. Afilias, Google, Radix, Donuts, Schlund, and Web.com also participated in the auction for .WEB.

The CEO of .CLUB, one of the best selling and most used new domains on the Internet today, believes the "not-com revolution" is finally happening. The .WEB sale price today far exceeds anything ever paid for a top level domain, and Colin Campbell, founder and CEO of .CLUB states: "The .WEB aucion exceeded our expectations on value. That being said, it sends a clear message that strong domain extensions like .WEB have substantial value. Although there are hundreds of new extensions launching, there are only a finite number of really strong, broad appeal names like, .WEB, .SHOP, .APP, .BLOG, and .CLUB that are fairly generic but have meaning. The not-com revolution is happening, as there is room for, and demand for, alternatives to .com."
