Bolton Foundation 'Throw Down' Raises over $91K for Local Nonprofits

The Bolton Foundation, philanthropic arm of California-based insurance broker Bolton & Company, recently raised more than $91,000 for local nonprofit organizations during its signature "Throw Down" cornhole tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Now in its second year, the event saw 96 teams comprised of Bolton employees, clients and partners compete in the daylong tournament that ultimately serves as the Foundation's largest fundraising effort.

Foundation founder and Bolton & Company Chief Operating Officer Mike Morey points to the considerable growth and success of this year's Throw Down as a source of inspiration for future tournaments.

"This year's Throw Down has raised the bar in terms of scale and impact," said Morey. "I can't tell you how proud and grateful I am for everyone involved-the participants, volunteers, sponsors and anyone who helped make this event possible. Our ultimate dream is to continue to see this grow and benefit even more organizations that do so much good within our communities."

The event raised close to $20,000 more than its debut last year, and a significant portion of the total amount raised will provide grant funding for this year's selected recipients: Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Pasadena Police Activity League, The Place of South Pasadena and St. Anne's. Additional grants will be provided throughout the year to select nonprofit organizations.

Pasadena Tournament of Roses President Brad Ratliff, who provided opening remarks for the event and made the ceremonial first toss, said there is a major parallel between The Bolton Foundation Throw Down and this year's Rose Parade theme, "Echoes of Success."

"Echoes of Success really celbrates those people, organizations and institutions that play a role in the success of others," said Ratliff. "It's about groups like The Bolton Foundation giving back to those communities and organizations that need support. That really defines what the theme of the parade is about this year. It's about those folks who really do make a difference in the lives of others."

In addition to the grants that will be provided to select nonprofits throughout the year, the top four teams from the tournament were awarded donation checks to benefit the charity of their choice.

Money from the Throw Down was raised through registration fees and sponsorship support from a number of Bolton & Company's carriers and partners, including Chubb, Liberty Mutual Insurance, The Hartford, AmWINS Group, The Hanover Insurance Group, and Socius Insurance Services, Inc. Additionally, there were 15 organizations that sponsored cornhole boards for the event:

  • Aetna
  • AFCO (Hole-in-One Sponsor)
  • AmWINS Group
  • Argo
  • Fisher & Phillips
  • Guardian
  • The Hartford
  • Interstate Restoration
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Merrill Lynch
  • Nationwide
  • Nigro Karlin Segal
  • Feldstein & Bolno, LLC
