The report categorizes the nanolithography equipment market into three major end-user segments:

  • Foundries
  • Memory manufacturers
  • IDM

Foundries in nanolithography equipment market

The foundries segment is expected to reach USD 184.4 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 0.49% during the forecast period. Fabless semiconductor companies design semiconductor ICs while outsourcing the manufacturing to foundries. Such foundries are known as pure-play semiconductor foundries. These foundries work with IC designers to develop efficient ICs. Lithography equipment, including nanolithography equipment, plays a key role in the fabrication process of semiconductor ICs.

According to Navin Rajendra, an industry expert from Technavio, "The market is likely to post a negative growth rate in 2016 due to the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry, which impacts the market revenue adversely. However, market revenue will increase slowly throughout the forecast period due to the rising adoption of electronic devices worldwide and the growth of advanced consumer electronics such as digital cameras, gaming consoles, notebooks, tablets, smartphones, network switches, and set-top boxes. However, market revenue will increase slowly throughout the forecast period due to the rising adoption of electronic devices worldwide and the growth of advanced consumer electronics. The demand for electronic devices such as digital cameras, gaming consoles, notebooks, tablets, smartphones, network swtches, and set-top boxes will continue to grow at a moderate rate."

Technological advances, reduced energy consumption, improved durability, enhanced quality, superior performance, and highly efficient semiconductor ICs are driving the demand for nanolithography. In order to meet this demand, semiconductor foundries require capital equipment that has high throughput.

Memory manufacturers in nanolithography equipment market

In 2015, the segment accounted for a 24% share of the market due to the proliferation of smartphones and solid-state drives. Semiconductor memory chips and technology constitute an invaluable part of electronics. The growth in the number of microcontroller-processed parts in an electronic device has made memory a necessity for semiconductor devices. Moreover, the adoption of 3D NAND technology by major market vendors such as Samsung (News - Alert), Toshiba, SK-Hynix, and Sandisk will lead to further development and commercialization of 3D NAND devices.

"However, high manufacturing standards have restricted the market's growth as the implementation of these standards affects the sourcing of raw materials, increasing the cost of the end-products considerably," states Navin.

IDMs in nanolithography equipment market

The IDMs segment will decline at a CAGR of nearly 2% by 2020. IDMs are focusing on the manufacture of efficient and high-quality ICs. Due to the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry, the segment declined steeply between 2015 and 2016. The manufacturing of ICs, from conceptualization to the actual production, is an expensive process. It requires high investment for the installation of equipment and machines like nanolithography equipment for chip fabrication. However, the decline will be steady after 2016 due to the migration of IC manufacturing companies to the fabless model in order to reduce the pressure on their cash reserves and improve focus on their core strength.

Fabless companies design chips, which is the primary source of their revenue. IDMs, on the other hand, carry out end-to-end design, manufacture, and sale of chips. The number of IDMs is expected to decline further before the large-scale commercialization and use of nanotechnology. This transition is affecting the IDM market, which will lead to a decline in revenue from the segment.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio's research analysts in this report are:
