Aquantia Ships 1 Millionth First-Generation AQrate® 5/2.5 Gigabit NBASE-T PHY

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Aquantia Corp, the market leader of high-speed Ethernet connectivity solutions for data centers, mobile and enterprise infrastructure, today announced that just two and a half years after bringing the industry's first and only 5/2.5 Gigabit NBASE-T PHY to the market, the company has shipped more than 1 million ports. The explosive delivery of this breakthrough 28nm communications PHY, noteworthy even by industry standards, has enabled widespread implementation of next-generation IEEE 802.11ac Wireless LAN Access Points and campus Ethernet switches.

The AQrate PHY, which was first sampled in 2013, delivers throughputs 5 times faster than had previously been available via existing Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) solutions. The PHY went into full production in 2014 and was adopted the following year by its Tier 1 infrastructure provider customers, creating a multi-vendor environment. Because the PHY allowed these customers and others to transition to faster wireless technology without replacing existing copper cabling, Aquantia was able to ship 1 million ports in just one year, several times faster than the industry norm.

"The introduction of the 5/2.5 Gigabit NBASE-T PHY was a clear milestone for the wireless industry and its customers. Up to that point, there was no easy, cost-effective method fr increasing the wireless network throughput in multi-user enterprise environments," said Faraj Aalaei, Aquantia president, and CEO. "The introduction of the Aquantia AQrate PHY provided the technological breakthrough necessary to reach that next level of connectivity, opening new markets and opportunities."

Large customers were among the first to use this new technology. In fact, Aquantia's best-in-class 1st generation 5/2.5 Gigabit NBASE-T PHYs remains the only such device shipping in production into a broad range of Tier 1 Enterprise switching and Access Point (AP) products today. This success was, in large part, made possible by a deep technology collaboration with our leading customers that helped Aquantia to advance ahead of competitors.

"In 1Q16, 5 and 2.5GBASE-T port shipments grew nearly 1000% sequentially," said Alan Weckel, Vice President of Ethernet Switch market research at Dell'Oro Group.  "We estimate that industry shipment of 5/2.5GBASE-T port shipments will reach 86 million ports in 2020 as enterprises, branch offices and SMB class equipment demands speeds in excess of 1Gbps."

Aquantia's recently released AQrate 2nd generation 5/2.5GBase-T PHY features the smallest footprint and highest level of functionality multi-Gigabit silicon in the industry and is expected to further expand the market for 5/2.5G connectivity to Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMB) and other environments were multiple BYOD users share networks and access applications and data in the cloud.
