More and more enterprise application development teams are transitioning to Agile for its time-to-market and quality benefits. However, the study found that companies struggling to properly manage requirements in Agile environments experience costly delays in project delivery.

Findings of the study include:

  • Missed requirements are the main source of delays
    • Up to 96 percent report problems due to missed requirements
    • Up to 88 percent experience these problems at least quarterly
  • Benefits of avoiding missed requirements
    • 65 percent reported they would benefit from better internal collaboration
    • 60 percent expect increased customer satisfaction from faster delivery
  • Desired capabilities of an Agile requirements solution
    • 88 percent need strong traceability to connect requirements, user stories and delivered capbilities
    • 82 percent want a data visualization feature

Blueprint Software will also host a webinar on "Why Agile Delivery Can Result in Missing Requirements" on May 25 at 11:00 AM EDT. Guest speaker Kurt Bittner, principal analyst serving application development & delivery professionals at Forrester, will discuss the results of this study.

Overview:
Blueprint Software's commissioned study "The Impacts Of Missed Requirements In Agile Delivery" examines how missed requirements are impacting AD&D professionals. In an effort to deliver applications more quickly, organizations have adopted Agile delivery practices. In doing so, they have boosted application delivery speed, but at the expense of the quality of specifications and requirements. The study, based on a survey of 100 U.S. AD&D professionals, from large, enterprise organizations, provides insight into the negative impact of missed requirements and how a reliable requirements management solution closes the gap and makes Agile adoption much smoother.

Dan Shimmerman, chief executive officer, Blueprint Software
"Poor requirements are a major contributing factor to software project failures as they are largely managed with disconnected documents and spreadsheets and no built-in traceability or auditing functionality. This is evident in the sheer number of projects being delivered overdue, over budget and short of expectations. Companies can dramatically improve Agile IT delivery with a solution that aligns business strategy and IT execution, ensures regulatory compliance and supports organizational transformation."
