Norwegian Artist Ane Lan's Solo Exhibition to Open Saturday at NCKU

A new solo exhibition, titled QU´RAN CHORUS, by Norwegian artist Ane Lan, alias Eivind Reierstad, is going to open this Saturday 2pm at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Art Center, and a live performance by Ane Lan will be conducted.

Curated by Prof. Ming Turner from NCKU Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID), the exhibition interprets the Holy Qu´ran through a gendered "Queer" perspective.

Turner said, as a white male, the artist is presenting himself both as an Islamic Woman in Hijab, and a female Kurdish freedom fighter trying to understand the paradoxical situation of women living under different Islamic regimes.

She added, the exhibition also makes a sharp commentary on the role of the media in the current polarization between the West (Europe/USA) and the Islamic world.

In Qu´ran Chorus, Ane Lan has tried to look t different aspects of the texts within the Qu-ran and its interpretations through his own imagination and personal fantasy and an imagined «journey» to the Middle East.

The different works are meant to suggest a reflection about gender, religion, violence, ancient tradition, spirituality, sexuality, media and the fantasizing/imagination about «the other». How can this imagination become a basis for politics and international conflicts?

Ane Lan alias Eivind Reierstad was born in Oslo, Norway in 1972. He graduated from the National College of Art and design in Oslo in 2002. He has participated in various international exhibitions under the artist name ANE LAN, including The Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC, Paco das Artes, São Paulo, the 51 th Venice Biennial and the 10th Istanbul Biennial. Reierstad has also presented his video and performance works in numerous international festivals.

Eivind works in the field of performance, music, video and photography under the female artist/project name Ane Lan. The project name functions as a platform for investigating identity and gender issues related to society, politics and history emphasizing a strong performance sensibility with references both to theatre and art history.

QU´RAN CHORUS: Ane Lan will open on April 30 and run until May 22.
