Heather H. Murren appointed to the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity

"I am honored to be appointed to this Commission and look forward to working across disciplines on what has become one of the most critical issues of our time.  The evolution of our digital society holds transformational promise for the future – from innovations that enhance our everyday expeiences, to viable solutions to the world's most intractable human problems.  Yet the full potential of technology and data analytics cannot be achieved without addressing the critical issue of security, which cuts across every branch of government, industry and society.

With nearly three decades of experience leading enterprises and conducting research in consumer products, finance, and healthcare, I am eager to apply this knowledge to the work of the Commission.  The search for solutions in protecting vital information related to national security and consumer privacy has never been more urgent."

During a career that spanned more than a decade on Wall Street, Ms. Murren was widely regarded for her work as a financial analyst specializing in global consumer products.  She is also a Founder and the former Chairman and CEO of the Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI), the first non-profit cancer research and treatment center in Las Vegas.  In 2009, Ms. Murren was appointed by Congress to serve on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC), established to examine the domestic and global causes of the financial crisis.  The published book based on its findings, The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, became a New York Times bestseller.  She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the John Hopkins University (JHU) and the JHU Applied Physics Laboratory.  Ms. Murren is President of the Murren Family Foundation.

The Commission will work across the government and the private sector by fostering collaboration between federal, state and local governments and the private sector on areas of cross-cutting benefit and interest: protecting privacy, promoting economic and national security, fostering discovery and development of new technological and practical solutions, and surfacing best practices.  The Commission is chaired by former National Security Advisor, Tom Donilon.  The Commission's Vice Chairman is former IBM Chief Executive Officer, Sam Palmisano.
