Joe Paduda to Discuss How Work Comp Formularies Can Control Opioid Prescriptions at the National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit


Joe Paduda will discuss the role of workers' compensation formularies in curbing opioid misuse at the National Rx Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit being held March 28-31 in Atlanta. Paduda is the president of CompPharma, a national consortium of workers' compensation pharmacy benefit managers that has been working with policy makers in several states as they explore and design formularies.

Paduda and Mark Pew (News - Alert), senior vice president of PRIUM, will present "Using Workers' Compensation Formularies to Reduce Rx Opioids" on March 30 at 11:15 a.m. Moderated by Michelle Landers, executive vice president and general counsel for Kentucky Employer's Mutual Insurance, the session will examine the ability of formularies to reduce the number of prescriptions for opioids and other risky, inappropriate drugs. Panelists will discuss how formularies facilitate patient access and proect patient safety. They will review the structures and outcomes of existing state formularies and offer best-practice considerations for designing and implementing one.



"Ensuring appropriate and timely pharmacy care for injured workers must be the first priority," Paduda said. "Formularies are important pharmacy management tools that need the right regulatory environments with strong utilization review and communications programs to succeed."
