Broadband "Privacy Framework" Balances Innovation and Consumer Protection, Says CTA

The following statement is attributed to Julie Kearney, vice president, regulatory affairs, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM, formerly the Consumer Electronics Association (News - Alert) (CEA)®, regarding today's release of the Privacy Framework discussion paper by the American Cable Association, Competitive Carriers Association, CTIA (News - Alert), the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, and U.S. Telecom Association:

"We applaud the announcement of this broadband Privacy Framework - a feasible, balanced way forward for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) to evaluate and enforce against violations of consumer privacy that are within its jurisdiction. Consumer technology companies recognize the importance of protecting consumer privacy while offering innovative, data-driven products and services - and want consumers' trust that companies are good stewards of their data.

"The Privacy Framework correctly suggests the FCC should maintain consistency with the long-standing principles that the Federal Trade Commission uses to guide its enforcement actions. As devices become more integrated and multi-functional, there is an increased risk of fragmented regulatory regimes, and avoiding a patchwork of requirements will benefit consumers and industry alike."

In October, CTA published Guiding Principles for the Privacy and Security of Wellness Data - a first-of-its-kind set of voluntary guidelines for private sector organizations that handle personal wellness data to enhance consumer privacy for health and fitness devices.
