Pica8 CEO Says SDN's Last "Black Box" Has Been Unlocked


At the Deutsche Bank Silicon Valley Private Company Forum held today in Santa Clara, Calif. for institutional investors and technologists, Pica8 CEO and co-founder James Liao told attendees that to gain broader acceptance and larger deployments, SDN switch and software makers must unlock the switching ASIC - the last "black box" in SDN implementation

To create solutions that are specific to their demanding application needs, Liao told attendees that switching ASICs from Broadcom (News - Alert), Cavium, and other vendors must be unlocked to increase in the number of OpenFlow flows that are possible in a data center.

"The move toward open networking has been like unlocking a series of black boxes to bring broad programmability to the network," said James Liao. "The first black box was disaggregation of a traditionally closed system, where the switch operating system and hardware wee tightly coupled, and the second was the SDN controller leveraging OpenFlow. Now, Pica8 has unlocked the third black box - the ASIC - to deliver broad programmability and more flexible memory use thereby debunking FUD in the white box switch marketplace."
