Technavio Releases New Report on the Global Access Control as a Service Market

Technavio's latest IT security industry report covers the present scenario and growth prospects of the global access control as a service (ACaaS) market during the period 2016-2020.

In this report, Technavio's information communications technology (ICT) research experts announce their key market highlights for global access control as a service market. Their findings include:

The cost-effectiveness of ACaaS solutions is the main reason for their adoption by small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs)

Increased use of mobile devices for professional and personal use is contributing to the growing demand for ACaaS solutions as these devices are highly vulnerable to attacks. The global ACaaS market is likely to witness significant growth during the forecast period due to the growing need for high-level data and identity security in corporate firms.

An increasing amount of critical and confidential data is being transferred on corporate networks, compelling large enterprises and SMBs to implement ACaaS. Enterprises are also adopting ACaaS for greater control over access to applications and sensitive information from remote locations.

This market is likely to witness immense growth during the forecast period as more SMBs and large enterprises are predicted to implement ACaaS. The extensive use of the Internet and advantages of cloud-computing services are expected to play a key role for this market's growth until 2020.

Leading vendors to acquire smaller players and enter regional markets during the forecast period

As the niche market players in this market have access to superior technology, the preferred way for large vendors to enter is through strategic acquisition of these niche players. Technavio analyst Amrita Choudhury, who specializes in IT security, expects the ACaaS market to see a continuing trend of consolidation.

"Since the market is highly fragmented with the presence of numerous small vendors that mostly operate in the niche markets, there is a wide scope for M&A. Large vendors such as Cisco, Microsoft (News - Alert), and IBM have followed this acquisition trend, which is likely to continue in the future. With increased demand for integrated solutions, vendors that do not have a strong presence in the market are expected to increase their market presence through such acquisitions," said Amrita.

Vendor   Acquired vendor   Date
Cisco (News - Alert) Neohapsis 11-Dec-14
IBM Bluebox 3-Jun-15
IBM (News - Alert) Lighthouse Security Group 11-Aug-14
IBM CrossIdeas 31-Jul-14
Microsoft   Double Labs   11-Sep-15

The Americas emerged as the major revenue-contributing region in the market, followed by EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and Asia-Pacific (APAC)

In 2015, the Americas accounted for the largest market share with around 47% of the overall revenues in the global ACaaS market. EMEA followed with 29.4% and APAC held approximately 23.3%. However, the market share of the Americas is likely to decline by the end of 2020 due to market saturation.

Conversely, the market share of APAC is estimated to increase during the forecast period due to the growing adoption of mobile devices by SMBs in countries such as, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and India. Over the next four years, the market share of EMEA is also likely to decrease due to economic uncertainty in parts of Europe and political uncertainty in MEA countries such as Yemen, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey.

Vendor competition and focus on customer retention

The leading market vendors are focusing on providing built-in user directory for self-service provisioning and managing user identities in their ACaaS solutions.

Support includes after-sales and maintenance support, which is offered with respect to the type of deployment at the customer location. As network attacks are key concerns among end-users, and require prompt care, the demand for support is increasing in the global ACaaS market.

Vendors in this market also are also differentiated based on their customer base. For instance, Cisco's customer base is vast and ranges across many industry verticals. Symantec (News - Alert) provides many features, but its customer base is limited when compared to other vendors such as IBM and Microsoft. Most of these major vendors sell similar solutions with only minor differences in their features. Therefore, consumers have the liberty to choose solutions according to their requirements.
