Eckerson Group Publishes WhereScape Product Profile and Evaluation

WhereScape, the data warehouse automation pioneer with software solutions for profiling, building, extending and managing data warehouses, analytic systems and big data platforms, announced today the publication of a WhereScape Product Profile and Evaluation by Wayne Eckerson, founder and principal consultant of Eckerson Group, a leading research and consulting firm.

"Unlike other data warehouse automation tools, WhereScape is a data-driven development environment," Eckerson writes in the report. "WhereScape doesn't contain a separate modeling tool to create conceptual or logical models. Rather, WhereScape developers start the design process by first importing external data and then modeling the data from there.

"Data-driven data warehouse automation tools, such as WhereScape RED, step developers through the process of creating facts, dimensions, hierarchies, surrogate keys, and indexes, among other things," Eckerson wrote. "In essence, a data-driven data warehouse automation tool develops a data warehouse at a physical level and generates all the SQL."

Eckerson writes that WhereScape "uses an ELT approach that relies on the underlying data warehouse database to do the heavy-lifting required to load, build and maintain the environment" and is "ideal for automating the creation and management of data marts for an existing data warehouse."

Eckerson als recognized WhereScape for its ability to "produce business and technical documentation that enables users to explore data warehouse designs, dictionaries, process dependencies and end-user objects. The report also singled out WhereScape for its broad platform support. "WhereScape supports the largest number of target databases of any data warehouse automation vendor, including Teradata, Oracle (News - Alert), SQL Server, Microsoft Analytics Platform System, DB2, Greenplum and Netezza, as well as some cloud databases."
