UK's FACT Director Gives a Talk on Media Arts at NCKU

Prof. Mike Stubbs, director at Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT), Liverpool, UK, recently gave a talk on New Modes of Media Art in the Public Realm-Poetics vs. Reality at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.

As the head of the UK's leading media arts center, Stubbs was the keynote speaker at a symposium on Techno Arts held at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts earlier this week and then invited by Prof. Ming Turner from NCKU's Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID) to come to Tainan and share his research and practice in media arts.

In his talk on November 16, he explored contemporary industries in terms of city leadership, national policy, European policy, and economic aspects of art practice.

In addition, he showed how he run his organization, how can he influence the society.

When introducing contemporary media artists including Tehching Hsieh and Agnes Meyr-Brandis, he talked about the real values of life saying, "the expectation around the material world needs to be of serious reconsideration."

He also said, "Despite for the technology and the ability of communication, there is still very little understanding. So I'm feeling quite sad."

People have to share better and think harder, Stubbs added.

Stubbs also provided some advice to the students. He said, "Never copy somebody else. Stick to your original ideas even if it doesn't make sense. Things don't have to make sense."

Turner talked about the new techno arts program in the university and noted, "The program has just started this semester and we need to have more and more experts, professors, artists, curators working in this field to share their research and that will help the students on their projects and also enrich our future development."

"I was impressed by the openness of some of the students. They asked questions and engaged in broad subjects. And they seem genuinely interested in cross culture exchange," Stubbs said.

In the talk, Stubbs revealed his interest in the collision between arts and science. "Some of the sciences that I'm looking in the moment are astrophysics, particle physics, and quantum mechanics, dark matter. These subjects are partly being applied to contemporary society in utility, also enormous questions about our belief system and how we conceive the world," he said.
