About Dr. Francesco Benazzo

Francesco Maria Benazzo was born in Pavia, Italy, in 1955 and graduated from the University of Pavia, School of Medicine in 1980. During medical school, he devoted himself to electron microscopy, with specific emphasis on connective tissue-including many months at Hannover Medical School's Department of Electron Microscopy in Hannover, Germany. He also pioneered the application of special techniques such as freeze-etching and freeze-fracture to connective tissue-cartilage and tendons in particular. He began his orthopaedic surgery residency in 1981 at the Clinica Ortopedica e Traumatologica dell'Università di Pavia, San Matteo Hospital, working under Chairman Prof. Mario Boni.

After completing his orthopaedic residency in 1985, Dr. Benazzo became Clinical Assistant in the hospital's Sports Traumatology section. In 1990, he assumed an academic role as Assistant Professor, and in 1995 was appointed as Lecturer of Hand Surgery. He became Full Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 2000, then Chairman of the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department at the University of Pavia, San Matteo Hospital in 2002. Dr. Benazzo also chairs the Program of Residency in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He has authored more than 140 publications, 70 peer reviewed articles, and is an invited speaker to national and international congresses presenting on a variety of orthopaedic topics, starting from his basic research work in electron microscopy.

Dr. Benazzo's primary fields of scientific and clinical interest include:

  • Connective tissue structure and mechanics
  • Tendinopathies in athletes and functional overload injuries (from basic research to conservative and surgical treatment and rehabilitation)
  • Experimental osteoarthritis in animals
  • Spine osteoarthritis (uncus formation and neurovascular compression in the cervical spine; surgical treatment of the spondylotic myelopathy)
  • Bone - metal interface in orthopaedic implants
  • Cementing techniques
  • Hip and knee prosthetic surgery with development of a hip prosthetic system which has now been implanted for 6 years
  • Development of MIS surgical techniques and tools for total knee replacement, together with new prosthetic components-tibial plates-to be adopted with the MIS approaches
  • Tissue engineering with the use of SAOS 2 and stem cells
  • Sports traumatology

Since 1981, he has been involved in the care of the top athletes of the Italian track and field national team, participating as team doctor at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984), and World Track and Field Championships of Rome, Tokyo, and to other European and World events. He has also served as the orthopaedic consultant to Italy's Track and Field national team since 1983, and to the Internazionale Football Club of Milano, of the First National Division between 2000 and 2014. During this time, he performed a multitude of surgeries on top class players for tendon and muscle injuries, fractures, and ACL and complex knee ligament reconstructions.

In 2005, Dr. Benazzo became President of the EFOST (European Federation of the National Sports Traumatology Societies) and organized the 4th EFOST Congress held in September 2006. He previously served as a member of the board of SIOT (Società Italiana di Ortopedia e Traumatologia). He is a member of ICRS (International Cartilage Repair Society) and ISAKOS (International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine), and the Secretary of the Italian College of Professors of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

Dr. Benazzo won the Best Scientific Exhibit award for his cartilage stimulation with pulsed electromagnetic fields at the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) Annual Meeting in 2007. He also serves as visiting surgeon (Australia, France, and South Korea) and instructor on cadavers for total knee arthroplasty and unicompartmental replacement for Zimmer Biomet.
