The Global STEM Alliance of the New York Academy of Sciences to Host Media Briefing on STEM Workforce

NEW YORK, Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In the United States, it's estimated that 75 percent of all jobs will require STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) expertise by 2018, with similar trends playing out in countries around the world. And yet students, particularly women, are dropping out of STEM at the moment when their skills are most needed. Just 24 percent of the world's STEM workforce is women and only 10 percent is made up of minority groups. A new framework is needed to ensure the next generation of STEM innovators is prepared to meet the growing challenges of the global economy.

On November 9, 2015 at the Conrad Hotel, the Global STEM Alliance (GSA) of the New York Academy of Sciences invites media to hear from leading industry and non-profit organizations about the state of science across the globe and the four key elements important to identify, inspire and empower future STEM leaders.

During the session, "The New STEM Workforce Model: Support, Technology, Education & Mentorship," reporters will:

• hear about how these companies are diversifying their workforce to advance innovation;
• have the opportunity to interact with students, mentors and female scientists involved in GSA and learn about their personal experiences in the classroom and industry; and
• view the latest virtual learning platform being used to connect students and STEM professionals around the world.

Topics of discussion include:

• successful strategies to recruit and retain diverse talent;
• corporate responsibility to advance professional development for women in science;
• impact of technology in creating collaborative teams essential to drive global innovation; and
• the role of science policy and advocacy in advancing the new STEM workforce.
