Niall Ferguson to Join the Hoover Institution Full TimeThe Hoover Institution is pleased to announce that Niall Ferguson will become a full-time, in-residence senior fellow as of July 2016. Ferguson has been an adjunct senior fellow at the Hoover Institution since September 2003. He comes to the Institution from Harvard University, where he served as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History. "Having had the benefit of his thinking and insights for quite some time, we are fortunate to finally have Niall in residence at the Hoover Institution. A prolific contributor on history and economics, Niall adds a unique perspective that will continue to benefit our research and the impact we have on public policy," stated Tom Gilligan, director of the Hoover Institution. Ferguson was the Philippe Roman Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics in 2010-11 and the BBC Reith Lecturer for 2012. He is a member of the Boards of Trustees of the American Academy in Berlin, the Museum of American Finance, and the New York Historical Society. His many prizes and awards include the Benjamin Franklin Prize for Public Service (2010) and the Hayek Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2012). He is managing director at Greenmantle LLC and serves on the Board of Directors of Affiliated Managers Group, a global asset management company. Ferguson is also a senior research fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. "I'm very excited to have been offered a full-time senior fellowship at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where I've been an adjunct senior fellow for more than a decade. Hoover is a unique institution, at once integral to Stanford University as a center of academic excellence and engaged in contemporary policy debates," said Ferguson. "I've always been inspired by Herbert Hoover's (News - Alert) vision of an institution dedicated to the study of war and peace and the upholding of individual freedom and representative governmet." Ferguson has published fourteen books and writes regularly for newspapers and magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. His first book, Paper and Iron: Hamburg Business and German Politics in the Era of Inflation 1897-1927, was short-listed for the History Today Book of the Year Award; the collection of essays he edited, Virtual History: Alternatives and Counterfactuals, was a UK best seller. In 1998 he published, to international critical acclaim, The Pity of War: Explaining World War One and The World's Banker: The History of the House of Rothschild, which won the Wadsworth Prize for Business History and was short-listed for the Jewish Quarterly/Wingate Literary Award and the American National Jewish Book Award. In 2001, after a year as the Houblon-Norman Fellow at the Bank of England, he published The Cash Nexus: Money and Power in the Modern World, 1700-2000. Ferguson is also an accomplished biographer who published High Financier: The Lives and Time of Siegmund Warburg (2010) and the first of two volumes on the life of Henry Kissinger. In 2011 his film company Chimerica Media released its first feature-length documentary, Kissinger, which won the New York International Film Festival's Prize for Best Documentary. "After what will be twelve years of teaching at Harvard, first at the business school and then in the history department, I am now ready to spend at least a few years on research and writing. My first task will be to complete the second volume of my biography of Henry Kissinger rather more rapidly than I did the first.
