Ascom integrates Honeywell's barcode scanning software decoder to create robust, reliable smartphone application for clinical use

Combining Honeywell's best-in-class enterprise-level barcode decoding software with the fast, reliable image capture of the purpose-built Ascom (News - Alert) Myco™ (My companion) healthcare smartphone, Ascom has created a barcode scanning application aimed at enhancing routines and improving productivity in mission-critical hospital and clinical settings.

The new digital health application uses the Ascom Myco smartphone camera to read barcodes from patient wristbands, charts, room/door signs, medications and other instruments, and automatically updates patient records using the secure hospital network. This application, which is now available as an option for customers of the Ascom Myco smartphone system worldwide, has the potential to eliminate mistakes from hand-written notes, reduce the time needed to complete clinical rounds and automate charting functions with on-the-spot updates.

"Leveraging Honeywell's (News - Alert) robust barcode recognition software and integrating it to work seamlessly on our device, we have created a clinical tool that can accurately and quickly read any type of barcode, even on a curved surface (like a wrist) or a code that's wet, smudged or damaged," said Jonas Anselmby, Global Product Manager for the Ascom Myco Smartphone. "It can even read through glass, which isn't possible with a typical laser barcode scanner, for instance."

Unlike downloadable barcode scanning applications from online marketplaces, which only recognize a few specific types of mainly retail-focused barcodes, the Ascom application reads all 1D and 2Dbarcodes used in the healthcare industry, and has been fine-tuned for speed and accuracy with the Ascom Myco built in camera and hardware.

"Scanning barcodes in the healthcare environment is becoming increasingly prevalent as a means to improve precision of patient records and save time," said Joseph Rogers, Senior Product Marketing Manager - OEM Software, Honeywell Sensing and Productivity Solutions. "Robustness and accuracy in reading barcodes are two critical aspects that Honeywell technology provides."

With thebroadest product portfolio in the automatic identification and data collection industry, Honeywell Sensing and Productivity Solutions provides data collection hardware for retail, healthcare, distribution centers, direct store delivery, field service and transportation and logistics companies seeking to improve operations and enhance customer service.

"Compared to anything you could download from a marketplace, Ascom has delivered an application that is much faster and more accurate at scanning, maintains network security and works without interfering with critical aspects of the phone such as alerts or alarms - something that couldn't be accomplished without careful integration of the software and device," said Anselmby.
