Russia Bids to Host WorldSkills Competition in 2019


NEW YORK, Aug. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Russian city of Kazan (500 miles East of Moscow on the Volga river) is vying to host the 2019 WorldSkills competition, and promises to bring modernity, passion, and achievement to the international event.

Kazan is among three contenders bidding for the right to hold the WorldSkills competition, along with Charleroi, Belgium and Paris, France. The final decision will be voted on by 65 country member delegates on August 10 at the General Assembly, one day before the 2015 WorldSkills competition kicks off in San Paulo, Brazil.

The competition seeks to increase the awareness and prestge of vocational and blue-collar professions. Held every two years, youth under the age of 23 (25 in certain events) compete in 30 skills categories including manufacturing, mechanical engineering, software and web design, robotics, health care, carpentry, jewelry, and culinary.



The World Skills competition dates back to 1950 when it was first held in Madrid, Spain. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, has been chosen to hold the 2017 event.
