German Industry 4.0 Pioneer and DMDII Executive Director Join Manufacturing Leadership Council's Board of Governors


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Frost & Sullivan's Manufacturing Leadership Council, the global business network for senior industrial executives, today announced the election of Industry 4.0 pioneer Prof. Dr. Detlef Zühlke, Chairman of the German SmartFactory Technology Initiative, and Dr. Dean Bartles, Executive Director of the U.S. Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), to the Manufacturing Leadership Council's Board of Governors.

In a unanimous vote, the Board of Governors, which steers the Manufacturing Leadership Council, approved the nomination earlier this month. With these appointments, the Board of Governors now includes 19 members from organizations such as Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, UCLA, MIT, Campbell Soup, Lexmark International, Tata Motors in India, Dell Computer, Cisco Systems and the University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing in the U.K.

Dr. Dean Bartles is a distinguished and highly accomplished U.S. manufacturing industry professional, a Board member at multiple U.S. industry associations, and a long-serving member of the Manufacturing Leadership Council. Formerly a Vice President with General Dynamics, he is now Chief Manufacturing Officer at UI Labs and Executive Director of the U.S. Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), part of the U.S. government's network of manufacturing innovation institutes across the country. He holds a BS degree in business administration from Shepherd University, an MBA, Shippensburg University; a Master's degree in international business from Tampa College; a Doctorate in business administration from Nova Southeastern University; and a PhD in technology management, from Indiana State University.

Prof. Dr. Detlef Zühlke founded the pioneering SmartFactory Technology Initiative in Germany in 2005, working alongside a consortium of industrial and academic partners to explore digitally rich new plant floor technologies for the factories of the future, known in Germany as Industry 4.0. A former Vice President with German airline Lufthansa, he is now both Chairman of the SmartFactory consortium and Scientific Director of Innovative Factory Systems at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He holds a Master's degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences and a PhD in robot programming from RWTH Aachen University, and is Doctor Honoris Causa at Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, Romania.
