Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and AirHop Communications Team to Jointly Innovate on 4G Wireless Network Deployments

Industrial Technology Research Institute (News - Alert) (ITRI) of Taiwan and AirHop Communications today announced their collaboration on the evolution of Taiwan's 4G wireless networks with AirHop's award-winning eSON™ technologies.

A showcase network based on AirHop's (News - Alert) eSON software will be jointly designed and deployed to demonstrate and promote the benefits of Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) SON to all mobile network operators (MNOs) in Taiwan. The collaboration will also extend to advanced research in networking technologies to address the challenges of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).

While worldwide demand for wireless data continues to grow dramatically, industry and regulators are eagerly seeking approaches to bolster wireless network capacity, including expansion in the amount of available spectrum for wireless services and increasing network density through HetNet deployments of macro cells, small cells and WiFi (News - Alert) networks.

High density HetNet deployments face many challenges requiring automated network management, including deployment and configuration, interference and mobility management, and optimization for quality of service (QoS) and quality of user experience (QoE), just to name a few. Additionally, innovation in network-level technologies is critical to achieve the objective of 5G networks in terms of ultra-high data throughput, ultra-low latency, high QoS and QoE and scalability to manage billions of connected devices in the age of IoT.

ITRI and AirHop will jointly test and benchmark AirHop's flagship eSON software platform with the goal of creating a recommendation of a state-of-art HetNet SON for MNOs across the country. In addition, ITRI aims to use eSON as the baseline for network technology innovation for 5G and IoT.

"AirHop's eSON delivers HetNet management, automation and optimization for 4G commercial networks today and we are pleased to collaborate with them to advocate this soltion to MNOs in the region," stated Dr. Ching Feng Liang, manager and small cell project leader at ITRI. "Building on this strong foundation, we will also explore the possibility to leverage their platform and open interfaces as a critical element for 4G and 5G small cells."

"ITRI is a leader in technology innovation and adoption in Taiwan and across Southeast Asia," noted Yan Hui, founder and CEO of AirHop. "This collaboration is a strong endorsement of AirHop's technology. ITRI's substantial innovation experience combined with AirHop's commercially adopted 4G HetNet SON technology provides great leadership for innovation in 4G and beyond."
