"Cardio Team One" The Only Program in Michigan Meeting Key American Heart Association Guidelines

The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) has become the only health care facility in Michigan that now operates in complete compliance with the American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for treating high-risk heart conditions within one day through its unique Cardio Team One group of interventional cardiologist stationed around-the-clock at select DMC hospitals.

"There's no doubt that a patient who's struggling with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS (News - Alert)) should be treated as quickly as possible," says Theodore L. Schreiber, M.D., the DMC Heart Hospital president. " Many of these patients are at risk for potentially life-threatening or disability-related outcomes, and it's extremely important that they receive appropriate catheterization as soon as possible at the hospital."

The American Heart Association "ACS Treatment Guidelines" recommend that ACS patients who require catheterization should have the procedure done within 24 hours to prevent the patient's illness from progressing from an ACS to a heart attack.

"Unfortunately, most U.S. hospitals today aren't always able to meet those 24/7 guidelines because they don't have a skilled heart-attack team that can do catheterizations stationed at the hospital around the clock, including on Sundays and holidays," says Dr. Schreiber.

In recent years, thanks to the Cardio Team One program, the DMC has been able to take action within minutes of any potential heart-attack patient's arrival at the hospital, cutting wait time in half. In most cases, those ACS patients who need catheterization begin to undergothe procedure within 30-45 minutes of arrival - compared to a national average time of more than double that.

"All too often in Michigan, ACS patients who need catheterization on weekends and holidays - which are 30 percent of all days - don't get it until the following Monday," said Dr. Schreiber. "As a result, the AHA/ACC guidelines for timely catheterizations are simply not being met - and potential heart-attack patients are being placed at greater risk for negative outcomes as a result. But, the Cardio Team One approach means that all ACS patients who come to the DMC get rapid, high-tech treatment by specially trained catheterization specialists, every single day of the year."

The Cardio Team One approach to emergency heart care has been the key to the DMC's continuing ability to meet the AHA/ACC guidelines for one-day catheterization of appropriate ACS patients. Cardio Team One is fully operational at DMC Heart Hospital and DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital.
