IEEE Standards Association to Facilitate Collaboration at Augmented World Expo, Toward Advancing Interoperable, Open, Pervasive Augmented Reality (AR)

IEEE (News - Alert), the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced that the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) will show how it is advancing interoperable, open, pervasive augmented reality (AR), through a variety of activities at Augmented World Expo 2015 (AWE 2015), which is scheduled for 8-10 June 2015 at the Santa Clara (California) Convention Center. In addition to hosting networking sessions around the increasingly critical topics of cybersecurity and privacy, as well as speaking on multiple panels, the IEEE-SA is sponsoring and judging a new "Auggie Award" at AWE 2015, billed as "the world's largest gathering of professionals focused on Augmented and Virtual Reality, Wearable Tech, and the Internet of Things."

"This is the sixth year for the Augmented World Expo, and the fact that organizers expect this to be its biggest year yet is another indication of the rising market influence of AR," said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director, IEEE-SA. "The IEEE-SA offers a platform for developers and users worldwide to innovate for open and interoperable AR, and we are committed to stimulating adoption of emerging AR technology."

AWE's Auggie Awards promote excellence in augmented reality across various platforms and categories worldwide. Trophies will be awarded in 10 categories, including "Best Sci-Fi To Reality (The IEEE Challenge)." Competitors have submitted nominations that implement design concepts depicted in a short futuristic film by Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo, Sight (https://vimeo.com/46304267). A judging panel including Jay Iorio, director of innovation with the IEEE-SA, will award points to each nominee based on the implementation's similarity to the film and real-world functionality. Extra points are available for nominations that promote openness and interoperability. Winners of the IEEE Challenge and other Auggie Awards will be announced 9 June.

IEEE will host "Breakfast Networking" meetings 8-9 a.m. Pacific both 9 and 10 June, as well as a "Speed Networking (B2B Match Making)" session 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 10 June, on personal privacy in AR. Privacy, cybersecurity and Internet governance are the domains in which the IEEE Internet Initiative works to inform debates and decisions and to help ensure trustworthy technology solutions and best practices. With technology policy challenges emerging in cybersecurity, privacy and Internet governance around the world, the IEEE Internet Initiative connects engineers, scientists, industry leaders and others engaged in an array of technology and industry domains globally with policy experts, in a neutral environment, for the collective benefit of all stakeholders.

The IEEE-SA, furthermore, is leading a serie of talks on advancing interoperable, open, pervasive AR during AWE 2015:
