McCarthy Building Companies Named an InformationWeek Elite 100 Company

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was recently ranked as a top U.S. business technology innovator on this year's InformationWeek Elite 100. The firm was honored among the most progressive organizations in the country for its ability to apply emerging technology in practical ways. This is the fourth year McCarthy has been recognized in the publication's annual ranking.

"Technology is evolving faster than ever in the construction industry, and McCarthy is on the forefront of these advancements as we continually seek and adopt new methods to bring value to our clients and improve our business," said Mike Oster, McCarthy vice president and chief information officer. "The technological tools we are using today, beginning in the early design phase throughout construction, are allowing us to significantly increase operational efficiency, enhance project team collaboration, shorten project schedules, decrease budgets and produce higher quality projects."

McCarthy's Elite 100 entry featured the firm's use of Autodesk's BIM 360™ Field, a cloud-based solution accessed through an iPad app. This technological tool was adopted at McCarthy to heighten its quality and safety processes. Within the first year of adopting this solution, the firm was already seeing positive results including:

  • Over 60% of active projects went through the full deployment process
  • Over 230 active users were using the system, with another 1,700 receiving reports
  • Over 9,000 Quality and Safety Related Verifications were performed (a 300% increase in safety verifications over the previous year)
  • Over 68,000 Field Issues were captured and resolved

To further explain the value of this new technology, one of McCarthy's early-adopter projects performed a time study to determine the efficiency impacts of the tool in executing the Field Issue capture-to-close process, a critical ongoing component of each project's Quality Plan. The team comparedBIM 360 Field to the traditional process using Microsoft (News - Alert) Excel, a digital camera and email. The group observed an average savings of 22 minutes per issue across the entire process when using BIM 360 Field. Applying a conservative estimate of 15 minutes saved per issue to the 69,000 issues captured on this project equates to over 17,000 man-hours saved for the year.

"Gone are the days IT could run as an entity unto itself," said InformationWeek Editor Chris Murphy.

"If IT isn't part of product development, or marketing, or customer service, your company risks falling behind in the era of digital business. At InformationWeek, we talk about this as 'IT Without Borders,' as we see the best IT leaders tearing down traditional borders to help every department leverage technologies such as data analytics, cloud and mobility. The 2015 InformationWeek Elite 100 spotlights companies at which IT is not only inseparable from every department, it's pivotal to every customer experience."

This is InformationWeek's 27th year identifying and honoring the nation's most innovative users of information technology. The InformationWeek Elite 100 research tracks the technology-based investments strategies, and results of some of the best-known organizations in the country. Unique among corporate rankings, the InformationWeek Elite 100 spotlights the power of business technology innovation. Additional details on the InformationWeek Elite 100 can be found online at www.informationweek.com/elite100.
