IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Releases Internet of Things (IoT) Ecosystem Study in Advance of Key IoT Industry Events

IEEE, the world's largest professional organization advancing technology for humanity, announced today that the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE (News - Alert)-SA) has issued a new, comprehensive Internet of Things (IoT) Ecosystem Study. The study draws upon input from a global series of IEEE-SA roundtable events that addressed ten core questions covering IoT markets, technology and standards, while also examining the contributing role of academia and research in these areas. Additional input to the study was sourced from an IoT workshop held by the IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc), as well as reviewing members of IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group (CAG) and members of the IEEE IoT Initiative.

"The roundtable discussions that we moderated and hosted were entirely consistent with the overall conclusions of the IoT Ecosystem Study and reinforce the valuable role that all of the actors need to play to contribute to the IoT's development and success," said Oleg Logvinov, chair, IEEE P2413 Working Group and director special assignments, Industrial and Power Conversion Division, STMicroelectronics (News - Alert). "Moreover, it is clear that as the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, the IEEE has a vital role to play as a coordinator and facilitator."

The IoT Ecosystem Study more broadly defines IoT, outlines market and technological drivers, and explores the current activities on standardization, including IEEE P2413™ Draft Standard for an Architectural Framework for IoT, in order to assure interoperability, compatibility, reliability, security, and effective operations on a global scale.

This month, IEEE-SA and the IEEE IoT Initiative will co-host the Spring 2015 IoT Startup Event. Additionally, the association is also sponsoring the Internet of Things World Hackathon.
