IT Industry Encouraged by Passage of Important Cybersecurity Bills

WASHINGTON, April 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week the U.S. House of Representatives passed two important cybersecurity information sharing bills that provide liability protections to companies that share critical security information with the government. The National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act (NCPA) and the Protecting Cyber Networks Act also allow businesses to provide defensive measures to protect their own networks from criminal intrusion. These bills will help foster the existing public-private partnership that already exists between the government and industry by creating a trusted environment that makes the sharing of information easier for both contingents.

"We are pleased that Congress is moving important legislation on Cybersecurity. These two bills provide a crucial framework while protecting businesses that share information with the government," said Elizabeth Hyman, Executive Vice President ofPublic Advocacy, TechAmerica, powered by CompTIA. "If we expect companies to eagerly cooperate with government on cyber intrusions they must be provided with some liability protections."

In March, the Senate Intelligence Committee passed its information sharing bill, the "Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (S. 754)."  We encourage the full Senate to vote on this legislation so that the two chambers can work out any differences in their bills and get this much needed legislation to the President's desk for his signature.
