Security Lessons From the Front Lines: Heartland Payment Systems CEO Speaks Out

Heartland CEO Robert Carr is outspoken about the massive data breach the company suffered in 2008, exposing more than 130 million debit and credit card accounts. But at a time when comparable breaches have cost some senior executives their jobs, Carr remains a leader of the payment processing company -- largely because he stepped up to the huge security challenge, leading Heartland's adoption of end-to-end encryption, tokenization and EMV chip-and-pin payment card technologies.

Carr has watched the recent wave of data breaches and sees a common theme: Many companies haven't made the right choices or investments on the right security and out-of-scope solutions, and some of them are paying the price. In his presentation, Carr will lay out a CEO's view on selecting the right security and out-of-scope solutions and justifying the necessary investments.

Who:

Robert Carr, chairman and CEO, Heartland, InformationWeek Conference 2015 Speaker.

As chairman and CEO of Heartland, Carr is responsible for the strategic direction and growth of the company. Carr co-founded Heartland Payment Systems in 1997 and quickly built the foundation for an end-to-end credit, debit and prepaid card processing engine. Under his guidance, Heartland has been named a FORTUNE 1000 company; grown from 25 to more than 3,800 employees; from 2,500 to 300,000 business and education locations; and from a portfolio of $0.4 billion in bankcard volume to more than $100 billion. Heartland ranks as one of the nation's largest payment processors in the USA.
